Energy Saving Incentives

The Wallingford Electric Division offers various energy saving incentives to homeowners in town. Below you will find descriptions of these incentives and information on how to take advantage of them.

Energy Star Appliance Rebates

The Wallingford Electric Division offers rebates to residents who purchase new appliances that are Energy Star rated. The Energy Star rating is awarded to products that are among the most efficient energy users in their category. When looking to buy a new refrigerator, freezer, washer, air conditioner, or hot water heater, consider purchasing an Energy Star rated product. While the upfront cost is occasionally higher, the real savings appear on your electric bill.

To take advantage of this program, follow the steps outlined below:

1. Fill out the rebate form here.

2. Enclose the form in an envelope with a copy of:

- Your receipt

- Your last electric bill

- The yellow energy rating label enclosed with the appliance

3. Send the envelope to the following address:

CMEEC - CT Municipal Appliance Rebate

30 Scott Avenue

Norwich, CT 06360

Each qualifying purchase is eligible for a $60 rebate. The main restriction is that the appliance must be installed in Wallingford (no getting rebates for friends living out of town). If you need a new refrigerator, air conditioner, and washer, you can apply for three rebates for a possible savings of $180.

Home Energy Savings Program

Another great money-saving incentive program offered by the Wallingford Electric Division is the Home Energy Savings Program. Essentially, Wallingford residents can get a trained professional to conduct an energy-efficiency evaluation in their home. For residents with electric heating, the evaluation is free of charge. For residents with gas or oil heating, there is a small copay.

The technician will perform the following assessment:

    • Test home for air leaks and eliminate them if possible - Helps keep home warmer in the winter.

    • Test air ducts for leaks - Makes home heating more efficient.

    • Inspect attic insulation - Keeps home warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

    • Install compact fluorescent light bulbs - CFL bulbs use far less electricity.

    • Install hot water pipe insulation - Makes hot water heating system more efficient.

    • Install low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators - Reduces overall water consumption.

    • Inspect home appliances and give rebates if applicable - Save money on new energy efficient appliances.

To schedule an evaluation, call Competitive Resources, Inc. (located in Yalesville) at 203-294-9677.

Renewable Energy Policy

Homeowners looking to purchase specific renewable energy equipment for their homes can receive financial support through the Wallingford Electric Division. Funding comes from state-wide energy saving programs and is available for the following projects:

    • Solar Photovoltaics (Solar panels)

    • Solar-Thermal (Solar-powered hot water heaters)

    • Geothermal Heat Pumps (Home heating and cooling)

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb Starter Pack

In November for the past two years, the Wallingford Electric Division has distributed CFL starter pack applications to all customers. By simply filling out the form and mailing it to the specified address, you can receive six CFL bulbs free

of charge. The pack contains two 60-watt, two 75-watt, and two 100-watt replacements. Keep an eye out for this form and be sure to take advantage of it, as you will save money by using less electricity and get six brand new light bulbs for simply mailing out the form.

Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb Subsidies

If you missed out on the CFL starter pack, you are not entirely out of luck. The Wallingford Electric Division subsidizes CFL bulbs at numerous retailers throughout town. This means that purchasing energy efficient light bulbs in town may be cheaper than purchasing them elsewhere. Consider switching out old light bulbs in your home to CFL bulbs as the energy savings really do add up.
