"The beginning of the Bible is very much
smiled at, and indeed justifiably,
when it is understood to say that
once upon a time some god
formed a man out of a clod of earth.
People regard that as impossible
and naturally they are right.
No god can come along and
make a human being out of a
lump of earth.”
— Rudolf Steiner,
(Anthroposophic Press, 1987), GA 354, pp. 1-2.

You may be surprised to learn what the

Book of Genesis is really all about.

Here is a peek.

Adam and Eve

“We know from yesterday’s lecture [1] that human beings were of course soul/spiritual beings [2], and for this very reason they could not unite with the earth materiality...because, while the moon was still united with the earth, this was too coarse. So it came about that the great majority of human souls had to relinquish their union with the earth ... Some soul/spirits were more suited to pursue their evolution on Saturn for the time being, others on Mars, others again on Mercury and so on ... So what we call our human soul condition went through an evolution on the neighboring planets of our earth ... [But] by no means all human soul/spirits left the earth. What we might describe as the toughest souls were able to go on using earthly matter, and remain united with it. I have even mentioned  that in a surprising way there was a principal human couple who survived the densification of the earth. Spiritual investigation impels us to accept what to begin with seems incredible, that there was such a couple as Adam and Eve, as the Bible tells us, and that the races which arose on the return of the soul/spirits from the cosmos came about through their union with the descendants of this couple.” — Rudolf Steiner, GENESIS: Secrets of Creation (Rudolf Steiner Press, 2002), pp. 124-126.

Adam and Eve. OK. We expected to meet them in a discussion of Genesis. But migrations to other planets? And the separation of humanity into races, resulting from the return of the planetary emigrants? Steiner was full of unbiblical surprises.

The Bible tells us that God created the heavens and the earth. The word used in Genesis 1:1 for God is “elohim”. [3] Steiner explains that this word should be taken as plural: There were actually many gods involved in the Creation, primarily the multiple elohim. Thus, Steiner gives us a polytheistic account of Genesis in which there is no single God the Creator. The elohim, living in space, created us by thinking us up.

“[T]he being of the elements was administered and ruled by the elohim ... [W]e may think of the elohim reposing in space, and of what is indicated by ‘created’, bara, as a cosmic kind of thinking. What the elohim call up in thought is expressed by hashamayim and ha’aretz — an outward raying and an inner activating.” — GENESIS: Secrets of Creation, p. 17.

There are seven elohim, Steiner said, and they created the human form (sort of) by working on what had emerged from prior stages of evolution (Old Saturn, Old Sun, Old Moon — we’ll look into these in a moment).

“We must keep in mind as an apt description of the way the seven elohim worked together to arrive finally at their crowning achievement: to pour human form into what could arise out of the repetition of earlier stages ... [I]n what finally emerges as the crowning of the work of evolution, we have to see a product of the combined effort of all the elohim.” — GENESIS: Secrets of Creation, p. 43.

The elohim cooperated with each other and also with others gods. This is not your father’s Book of Genesis.

Before sending children to a

Waldorf or Steiner school,

you'd be well advised to buy and digest

several books of Steiner's teachings.

is compatible with your own.

Jehovah (or Jahve) turns out to be not God Almighty, Lord of Heaven and Earth; he is just one of the gods, one of the elohim. The main difference between Jehovah and the other elohim is that Jehovah moved to the Moon while the others worked from the Sun.

“[The] further evolution of man has only been possible because one of the Elohim, Jahve, accompanied the separation of the Moon [from the Earth] — while the other six spirits remained in the Sun — and because Jahve cooperated with His six colleagues....” — Rudolf Steiner, THE MISSION OF THE FOLK SOULS (Rudolf Steiner Press, 2005), p. 99.

The cooperation of the elohim was actually a uniting of their spiritual forces: They became, for a while, a composite being:

“[M]an could only be created once the seven elohim had become a unity: Jehovah-Elohim.” — GENESIS: Secrets of Creation, p. xii, introduction.

But the difference between Jehovah and the other elohim remains important — it is the difference between the Moon and the Sun, the Moon religion (Judaism) and the Sun religion (Christianity).

• "From the Moon, Jahveh [i.e., Jehovah] reigned over the heart and soul of the Jewish people..." — Rudolf Steiner, KARMIC RELATIONSHIPS: Esoteric Studies, Vol. 2 (Rudolf Steiner Press, 1974), p. 203.

• "As you know, we distinguish the Jews from the rest of the earth's population. The difference has arisen because the Jews have been brought up in the moon religion for centuries [i.e., they worship the Moon being, Jehovah]." — Rudolf Steiner, FROM BEETROOT TO BUDDHISM (Rudolf Steiner Press, 1999), p. 59. [4]

Then again, Steiner indicated, Jehovah is actually an illusion — he is Christ, the Sun God, as imperfectly perceived by the ancient Hebrews.

"If we think of Christ as symbolised by the direct sunlight, we may liken Jahve to sunlight reflected by the Moon ... Those who are to some extent conversant with this subject regard the transition from a temporary reflection of Christ in Jahve into Christ Himself just as they think of the difference between sunlight and moonlight: Jahve is an indirect and Christ a direct revelation of the same Being ... Those who speak of these things from the point of view of occultism will say: If we call the religion of Christ a Sun-religion...we may call the Jahve-religion a Moon-religion — the transitory reflection of the Christ-religion. Thus in the period preceding the birth of Christianity the Sun-religion was prepared for by a Moon-religion." — Rudolf Steiner, BACKGROUND TO THE GOSPEL OF ST. MARK (Rudolf Steiner Publishing Co., 1985), lecture 9, GA 124.

The Days of Creation

The days of creation described in Genesis do not refer to the period when God produced the universe out of nothing: They actually refer to the recapitulation of previous phases of evolution, which occurred on or during Old Saturn, Old Sun, and Old Moon. [5]

“[I]n a certain respect, where all our descriptions of the six days of creation are concerned, we are in the domain of clairvoyant perception. What has existed in an earlier times now came forth in etheric or elemental form. We must get a firm grasp of this, otherwise we shall be all at sea regarding what the monumental words of Genesis really mean. So what we must expect to see is all that had evolved by stages during the Saturn, Sun and Moon evolutions emerging in a new form.” — GENESIS: Secrets of Creation, p. 31.

This is how Steiner worked. He delivered lectures on a vast array of topics, but no matter what the announced topic for a lecture might be, he tended to circle back to a fistful of central occult doctrines, most of which depend on his basic evolutionary fantasy. In brief, we have evolved from Saturn to Sun to Moon to Earth. Here on Earth, we have evolved through the Polarian, Hyperborean, Lemurian, and Atlantean epochs, arriving in our present age, the Post-Atlantian Epoch. Next, after completing two more Earthly epochs, we will evolve to Jupiter, Venus, and Vulcan. [6]

The Book of Genesis, as described by Steiner, is about all sorts of things that do not appear in the Book of Genesis. Atlantis, for instance. You see, the elohim jointly created us, but only in a mushy sort of form, and Jehovah then made us more like ourselves — firmer, as it were — and in this form we took up residence on Atlantis.

“[W]e must regard the Jehovah human being, the human being into whom Jehovah impressed his own being, as the direct successor of the more etheric, more delicate human being was was created on the sixth ‘day’ ... [I]f you wanted to describe the Jehovah human being who passes over to Atlantis you would have to say that the human being who was created by the elohim on the sixth ‘day’ evolved into the unisexual human being, the Jehovah human being.” — GENESIS: Secrets of Creation, p. 146.

Unisexual? Well, yes. Despite what the Bible says (“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” - Genesis 1:27) things were not so simple. We started out as vague etheric sorts of beings, then Jehovah made us firmer, and we went to Atlantis... But as to the division into sexes...

But maybe you’d like to look that up yourself. I urge you to do it. Get GENESIS: Secrets of Creation, and study Steiner’s teachings. They aren’t what you might expect from a casual — or even an intensive — study of the Bible.

The Fall

We should not quit without first examining one more major episode in Genesis: The Fall of Man. Below are a couple of Steiner quotations. If you can convince yourself that Steiner is right, then you might as well throw away your Bible along with any books you own that lay out the findings of modern science. Despite his claims, Steiner propounded doctrines that are fundamentally incompatible with both the Bible and science.

◊ “Everything good or bad which can be classed as a state of inner comfort or satisfaction came from Lucifer. At first it was an alien influence. The astral body [one of our three invisible bodies] as it had been previously, when it was formed by the currents which streamed into it from the world of the stars, now became different, became the kind of astral body which was permeated by the luciferic influence [the influence of Lucifer and his minions]. In consequence the human body of warmth and air became more condensed. It was only now that the man of flesh came into being; it was only now that this further densification occurred.” — GENESIS: Secrets of Creation, p. 118.

◊ “[W]e must go back to the time before the Luciferic influence had penetrated into the astral body of man. This influence approached humanity at the time when the ancestral human couple [Adam and Eve] were living on the Earth. This ancestral couple had been strong enough to master human substance and to incarnate, but had not been strong enough to resist the Luciferic influence. The effects of the influence extended into the astral bodies of this couple too, with the consequence that it was impossible to allow all the forces that were in ‘Adam and Eve’ to be transmitted to their descendants. The physical body had necessarily to be transmitted through the generations, but the leadership of humanity  [high spiritual beings and initiates who oversee our evolution] held back a portion of the etheric body [another of our invisible bodies]. This was expressed by saying: ‘Men have eaten of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil’ — that is to say, they have partaken of the Luciferic influence; but it was also said: ‘The possibility of eating also of the Tree of Life must now be taken from them.’ This means that certain of the forces of the etheric body were kept back and did not pass on to the descendants. Thus after the Fall, certain forces were no longer in ‘Adam’, and the still guiltless part of his being was nurtured and fostered in the great Mother-Lodge of humanity [the “lodge” where our spiritual guides gather]. [7] This was, so to speak, the Adam-soul as yet untouched by human guilt, not yet entangled in what had actually caused the ‘Fall’ of man. These pristine forces of the Adam-Individuality were preserved; they were there and were then led as a provisionalEgo’ [yet another of our invisible bodies] to the child born to Joseph and Mary. Thus in his early years this Jesus-child [Steiner said there were two Jesuses] [8] bore within him the power of the original progenitor of earthly humanity [i.e., Adam].” — Rudolf Steiner, THE GOSPEL OF LUKE (Rudolf Steiner Press, 1964), lecture 4, GA 114 .

Take that, Bible and science.

For more on the Creation as described by Steiner,

see "Origins"

[1] Note how Steiner continually offers us himself as the chief expert, the chief authority and source. He has told us various things, as he reminds us repeatedly — and we should accept what he has told us.

[2] Steiner taught that humans possess both souls and spirits, and these may sometimes be considered a single supersensible entity, a soul/spirit. The elohim who created us had a “soul/spirit nature” that they conferred, in a sense, on us.

[3] Steiner is right that "Elohim" has the form of a plural noun, but in the Bible the word is used as a singular noun:

Elohim. (Hebrew: God), the God of Israel in the Old Testament. A plural of majesty, the term Elohim — though sometimes used for other deities, such as the Moabite god Chemosh, the Sidonian goddess Astarte, and also for other majestic beings such as angels, kings, judges (the Old Testament shofetim), and the Messiah — is usually employed in the Old Testament for the one and only God of Israel, whose personal name was revealed to Moses as YHWH, or Yahweh. When referring to Yahweh, elohim very often is accompanied by the article ha-, to mean, in combination, ‘the God,’ and sometimes with a further identification Elohim hayyim, meaning ‘the living God.’

"Though Elohim is plural in form, it is understood in the singular sense. Thus, in Genesis the words, ‘In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth,’ Elohim is monotheistic in connotation, though its grammatical structure seems polytheistic. The Israelites probably borrowed the Canaanite plural noun Elohim and made it singular in meaning in their cultic practices and theological reflections.” — "Elohim." ENCYCLOPÆDIA BRITANNICA, Online, 09 Mar. 2010.

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are monotheistic. Anthroposophy is polytheistic. [See "Polytheism".]

[4]  We had to move beyond Judaism to Christianity, Steiner said again and again. But, of course, the "Christianity" he preached was his own set of doctrines, including planetary migration, Atlantis, Jehovah presiding from the Moon, and Christ as the Sun God.

“Had Christ not appeared on the earth, had He remained the Sun-God only, humanity on the earth would have fallen into decay.” — Rudolf Steiner, THE FESTIVALS AND THEIR MEANING (Rudolf Steiner Press, 1996), p. 277.

Unless we are willing to twist words so that their meanings change completely (as Steiner did), we must remember that Steiner's versions of "Christianity" and "Judaism" and "Genesis" (and almost everything else) are bogus.

[5] See "Old Saturn", "Old Sun", and "Old Moon Etc."

[6] Steiner's terminology can be confusing. When he used the names of various planets, he sometimes meant the planets, but sometimes he meant stages of evolution. In the former case, he was referring to locations in the sky; in the latter, he was referring to periods of time or duration. Sorting out which he meant in each instance is sometimes complex. [See "Planets".] The stages of evolution should, more properly, be referred to as Old Saturn, Old Sun, Old Moon, Present Earth, Future Jupiter, Future Venus, and Future Vulcan.

“The great mother lodge of humanity, where the great initiate Manu [aka Noah, a great initiate from Atlantis] directs and guides processes in the spirit, looks after individuals such as John the Baptist ... The incarnation of  an I [i.e., a human individuality having a spiritual Ego] such as the Baptist was directly guided by the great mother lodge of humanity, the center of spiritual life on earth.” — Rudolf Steiner, ACCORDING TO LUKE (SteinerBooks, 2001), p. 12.

“[I]n preparation for the Mystery of Golgotha [i.e., the Crucifixion] two Jesus-children were born. The one was the Jesus who descended from the line of Solomon and bore the Ego of Zarathustra. The other, coming from the Nathan line of the House of David, was a very special Being. In the twelfth year of the life of the latter the Ego of Zarathustra passed over into him from the child of the line of Solomon, and from that time until his thirtieth year the Nathan child with the Ego of Zarathustra made himself ready to receive the Christ-Being.” — Rudolf Steiner, PRE-EARTHLY DEEDS OF CHRIST (Steiner Book Centre, 1976), a lecture, GA 152.
