An Evening

with Hugh Johnson

Legendary wine writer, Hugh Johnson, came to UC Davis to present a talk on Tuesday 23 February, 2016. This was in conjunction with the recent announcement that Mr. Johnson has chosen the UC Davis Shields Library to receive donation of his research notes and manuscripts for posterity.

Here is a link to the story in Decanter Magazine.

The event was held in the UC Davis Student Community Center. Here is a brief look at some scenes of the venue and arriving guests.

The Guests were seated and UC Davis Librarian, MacKenzie Smith, introduced the interlocuteur of the evening Thomas Pinney and the very special Guest, Hugh Johnson. Here is the full length video of the main event.

The wonderful talk, filled with very diverse and unique points of view much opposed to the notions of many new age wine writers, ran for just over an hour. Following the talk, guests greeted Mr. Johnson who so very graciously signed books and answered questions. A reception with wine, beverages, and hors d'oeuvres took place out on the balcony off of the main room.

Following the evening's event Darrll Corti, a few UC Davis Staff members, and I were honored to have an intimate dinner with Mr. Johnson and his wife Judy at Seasons Restaurant in Davis. Darrell gave a quick explanation of the wines he brought to for dinner.

Here is a copy of the dinner menu complete with Mr. Johnson's autograph.

Mr. Johnson and Darrell talk about the dessert wine, which comes from Mr. Johnson's very special first growth vineyard in Tokaj, Hungary in the next video.

I had a chance to ask Mr. Johnson a question about Tokaj, Hungary. Here is his response.

The evening was a complete honor to behold. The kindness and graciousness shown by Hugh Johnson was unparalleled. Our sincere thanks to him and the UC Davis Staff for a wonderful and humbling evening.
