Membership of the group is made up of male and females aged between 10 and 14 years old.

The staff supporting the group are young adults themselves are aged between 15 and 18 years; being mentored by adult volunteer staff at the centre.

Desires moto is “STEP OUT OF THE FIRE AND INTO DESIRE”. Staff often helping children who are struggling to feel part of a community or have been disadvantaged by an adverse family situation, also some of them having behaviour issues and problems in school; many are struggling socially. Desire becomes the place where they feel comfortable, and able to talk about what is happening in their life having a safe and supervised environment; being able to relax, open up and have fun while acquiring the ability feel part of a wider community not only this, but they also find that they are able to make new friends and to become part of a new social group.

We take full advantage of any external support and guidance, organisations with helping members by referring them for support this includes such groups as Go-Gettas and the Worth It team also referring and guiding to available activities provided by the local authorities.

This group not only benefits the members that attend but the volunteers gaining valued experience in youth engagement , customer services, catering; health and safety, office and administration; all these are skills and knowledge they can use further in adult life and future careers.

Members pay an entrance fee also we run a café selling refreshments. This helps us become a little self-sufficient helping with running costs and sustain the group.

Activities are varied from games nights, movie nights, Arts and craft including team building activities. Some nights they just want to listen to music and have a chat, other nights, like one recent, we ran a team building activity were the group split into four teams and the task was to build an apparatus to protect an egg from breaking after being released from a great height. This activity produced some great team work with a friendly competitiveness and great designs; resulted in all members and staff having a laugh and soft approach to learning in with it.

Winner of Youth Group Of The Year Pride of Charnwood Awards 2016

The groups put forward for this award form a supportive group who work together, often in

challenging circumstances, to achieve positive change and a brighter future for all.

Charnwood Youth Councillors decided that Desire Youth Group is a great demonstration of young leaders managing a youth group themselves (with some adult support). The young volunteers provide a safe and caring space for younger teenagers to meet. They have recently taken part in a consultation to help design and commission a local skate park.
