Why am I running?

It has been an honor and a pleasure serving our community.  While the work has been challenging, it is even more inspiring.  I have learned so much and have gained valuable experience that I hope to utilize as I seek a second term on the school board.  While these past four years have been transformative for our district, we have so much work that needs to be done in order to best serve our students.  I have no doubt that we will make great strides because we live in a wonderful community with fantastic families, amazing staff, committed leaders and awesome kids!

Our district has made great progress over the past four years.  We have focused on our strategic priorities and are seeing results.  We have improved our math, reading and science outcomes and have enhanced the entire learning continuum from early learning to college and career readiness.  We have done this while earning top marks for fiscal responsibility!

While we have seen increases in enrollment, security, early learning, personalized learning and test scores, we still face serious challenges that include an unacceptable achievement/opportunity gap, aging facilities and uncertainties in education finance at the state and federal level.

With a new superintendent, a strong and stable school board will be well positioned to tackle these and future challenges.  I will leverage the experience I have gained over the past four years to ease the transition of our new superintendent and work diligently to keep our district focused on educational excellence.    

 What are my qualifications?

I hope to continue bringing an important perspective, skill set and voice to the school board. 

As a school board member, I have valuable experience in areas such as governance, equity, communication, ethics, finance and policy.  I have had the opportunity to get to know all of our wonderful schools as well as their teachers and staff, families and, most importantly, students.  I am readily accessible to anyone who has a concern.  I have learned that going to Target on Robert Street is a great place to get informal feedback on how our district is doing!

  • ISD 197 Gifted and Talented Advisory Committee (2014-2016)
  • School Board Representative to: Pilot Knob, Heritage, Henry Sibley, Somerset and Garlough
  • Citizens Advisory Committee on Hwy 149 and Dodd Road overlay, MN Dept. of Transportation

As a parent of recent graduates, I have insight into the ways we can best prepare our students so they are successful through and beyond high school, whether that is a two or four year college or directly into the workforce.  We must be well positioned to give our students a wide variety of educational and co-curricular experiences during their time in our district.  Every student must be able to pursue a meaningful path individually and we must build a framework that can support all of our varied learners.

My volunteer work in the wider community complements my work for the district.  As a member of the Parks and Recreation Commission of Mendota Heights, we are working together with our neighboring cities in new ways that will benefit the entire community.  As a member of the Greater Twin Cities United Way board of directors and chair of the Systems Change and Innovation Committee, there is shared interest in the areas of early learning and career and college readiness.  These are just a few examples!

I have 15 years of experience working in the private sector as an actuary specializing in pensions.  My work has enabled me to understand statistics, data, fact-based decision making along with a love of numbers and spreadsheets.

What are my goals?

Increase Student Achievement. In all aspects of education, we need to serve the varied needs of our learners.  We must utilize technology, continuous improvement and personalized learning in order to bring out the best in all of our students and to close the achievement gap.  We must update our strategic framework while staying true to the mission, vision and values of our district.

Build Relationships.  Our community is growing and vibrant.  We must work to strengthen our schools by expanding innovative partnerships with our businesses, cities and neighboring districts.   We must continue to engage our community and increase parent involvement in order to help our students build a successful future.  We must expand opportunities in areas such as job training, alumni connections, higher education, and community service as our students journey through school and prepare to enter the workforce.

Secure our Future.  The success of our students is dependent upon policies and practices that are sustainable in the long term.  In an ever changing world, we will be successful only if we adapt and change to varying conditions.  We must ensure the financial health of our district by working together in an open and transparent way to make what will inevitably be, at times, difficult choices.   Together, we must advocate for our students at the state and federal level.  We must attract and retain students in an environment where there is choice.  Our district must be accountable to our public as well as responsive to the needs of our students by providing the finest teachers and staff, a challenging learning environment and a wide variety of opportunities for enrichment.

Husband: Jimmy Levine

Education:  

  • B.S., Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin
  • M.A., Mathematics (emphasis in Statistics) from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Career:  Actuary (A.S.A., E.A.– Pension Actuary).  Currently a community volunteer.

Children: Josh (HSHS Class of 2013), Elana (HSHS Class of 2015), Maya (HSHS Class of 2017)
