SoundfontFree?
8.22mb GM A compact, lo-fi soundfont. Free. Released to public domain.
16mb GM GS MT V2.51 A small soundfont. Unknown. Do not use if you want realistic sounds, according to Elf, it is "a very poor soundfont". Tones have wrong samples and tunings.
Acapella A soundfont. Free. Licensed explicitly under WTFPL (public domain). All instruments are sung in Acapella. If you want proper instruments, do NOT use this soundfont!
Airfont 330A medium to large sized soundfont. Free. Licensed explicitly under CC-BY 3.0. However, Airfont series soundfonts feature Yamaha, Roland and Korg samples. The jet plane patch in Airfont 330 features a sample of a real "Airbus A330" airplane. Airfont 330 features GS support only for sound effects and extended drum kits. It also features XG support for sound effects only.
Airfont (not 330)A soundfont. Free. Released to public domain. However, Airfont series soundfonts feature Yamaha, Roland and Korg samples. Some versions have GS and MT-32 support. Most drumkits have full support for extended GS drum kit sounds. However, in Airfont 340 and Airfont 380, the standard and room kits only have limited support for the extended GS drum kit sounds.

All versions of Airfont with GS support use a slightly limited implementation of GS, as it lacks the wide variations of instruments like the pianos, and other variations of instruments.
Another XG A soundfont. Unknown. Samples came from many different soundfonts, some may be non-free.
ArachnoA medium to large sized soundfont. Non-free. Samples came from Yamaha Clavinova, Fairlight CMI, Roland SC-8850, Roland D-50, CrisisGM, and potentially more. Also "Non-Commercial Use Only".

CompifontA very large soundfont. Gray area. Samples came from Crisis GM, a non-free soundfont. Information is below. The Clean Guitar in CompiFont is also non-free.
Crisis GMA very large GM soundfont. Non-free. You had to pay commercial licenses to use commercially or even share, and you can't modify it. It cannot be used with Fluidsynth 1.x due to its size. Since the original site is now down, donation is impossible, and therefore it is impossible to use this for commercial use or to redistribute this! Therefore, it can never be supported ever again!

Elf of Happy and Love (Star Dream Studios) says: "Never download it!"

If you find derivative soundfonts with sounds from Crisis that you like the sound of, report the soundfont to me, and I may be able to make a "Libre Edition" of such soundfont with the Crisis (and other non-free) samples removed.

Crisis samples are usually easily identifiable, as the sample names begin with "CRS" or "CRISIS".

DO NOT DOWNLOAD CRISIS GM, OR USE CRISIS GM IN YOUR SOUNDFONT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DSOUNDFONT (Original, Plus, 4.02 and earlier)A soundfont by Strix, large for Original, very large for Plus. Non-free. Explosion sound usable for non-commercial use only. All other parts are public domain. DSOUNDFONT Lite never had the explosion sound because it was pure GM (Absolutely no GS support, not even the extended GS drum kit notes that literally every other soundfont has.)

Use a later version of DSOUNDFONT.
DSOUNDFONT (Gaming Edition, Ultimate, 4.10 beta 2 and earlier)A soundfont by Strix, very large for DSFGE, extremely large for DSFU. Non-free, for the same reason. They are not public domain, they are in a grey area.

There are two main variants, FluidR3 and FluidR3Mono. The former has mono and stereo samples, but the latter has mono samples only.

Fluid uses a slightly limited implementation of GS. This implementation lacks wide variations and other variations found in Roland GS. However, all drum kits support the extended drumkit sounds available in GS. Additionally, Fluid lacks SFX support without the GS version of the soundfont.
Freepats 2.0An incomplete soundfont designed to be free. Free. GPL'd. All modifications must be licensed under GPL, however songs created with these soundfonts can be licensed under any license. Do not use by itself yet.

The Freepats exception:

"As a special exception, if you create a composition which uses these sounds, and mix these sounds or unaltered portions of these sounds into the composition, these sounds do not by themselves cause the entire composition as a whole to be covered by the GNU General Public License. This exception does not however invalidate any other reasons why the composition might be covered by the GNU General Public License.

If you modify these sounds, you may extend this exception to your version of the sounds, but you are not obligated to do so. If you do not wish to do so, delete this exception statement from your version."

The soundfont will be GM when finished.

GMR BasicoA medium to large sized soundfont. Non-free. Non-commercial use only, can't be modified, can't be shared. One of the most restrictively licensed soundfonts.
GM Thai Mix A soundfont. Unknown. A mix of various soundfonts, some could potentially be non-free.
Game SoundfontsA soundfont with varied sizes, mostly compact. Gray area. GSFs are a gray area, as the samples are ripped straight off copyrighted games.

GSFs are not very good for use as realistic instruments, as the samples are usually from games which were created for 16 bit (4G) consoles (usually the Super Nintendo, but sometimes other 4G consoles like the Sega Genesis). Sometimes games which were created for 5G consoles (Nintendo 64, Playstation 1 and sometimes Sega Saturn), or newer consoles are ripped to create GSFs.

These game consoles have very limited sample sizes, therefore there is usually only one sample per instrument (in the case of GSFs created from 4G console games). Very few are GM mapped, so you can not usually run standard General MIDI mapped MIDI files through a GSF. Never use sounds from GSFs in a realistic soundfont, as the samples used in these games are unrealistic!

Automatic tools like "VGMTrans" can be used to generate GSFs and their corresponding MIDI files directly from a game's ROM. These automatic tools usually only work for a limited selection of game developers, as different game devs used different methods of storing samples inside the video game. Also, the MIDI files will only work with the specific GSF, as no automatic tools are known to be able to generate a GM soundfont and/or GM MIDI files. However, for most methods of sample storage that are supported, these automated tools can automatically generate percussion soundfonts with a GM-like drum kit map. I believe that newer versions of these automatic tools will be able to create GM mapped GSFs, that will be exciting!

Anyway, the game devs (and the original sample creators) retain the copyright to these samples. Don't use them commercially either, even if the GSF creator licensed it freely.
Giant Soundfont A large to very large soundfont. Non free. Some samples are from Crisis GM! This is a split bank, however all 4 parts are required for full GM compatibility.

Industry Standard A small to medium sized soundfont. Free. Released to public domain.
Iowa Orchestra A sample library. Free. Released to public domain. Not a soundfont by default, must be assembled into one. Raw samples are not the best quality, but can be made quite good. Examples of instruments include "Steinway" pianos, solo strings, woodwind, solo brass, guitars and percussion. No ensemble samples available.
Jc Live 2.1 A small lo-fi soundfont. Unknown. It is not live, it is unrealistic, do not use for realistic instruments!

Star Dream Studios Soundfonts Very large soundfonts made by Star Dream Studios and Strix. Free. GPL'd. All modifications must be licensed under GPL, however songs created with these soundfonts can be licensed under any license. These include "100% Natural/Realistic Samples" according to Elf, and is "all in one". These are split banks. Starlight Dream features Yamaha-like patches, and Super Natural Classic features Roland-like patches. Super Natural Classic is coming soon. Some patches which are resynthesised may not be as realistic compared to real samples. These are smaller than Enchant! and do have a slight quality reduction compared to Enchant!, but they are almost as good, and almost no one will notice the reduction in sample quality.
I recommend this soundfont!

Even though documents have been shared by the author about releasing the soundfont to the public domain, the soundfont itself says that it is not for commercial use, due to third party patches. Elf believes that the public domain status is a lie. Strings sounds are NOT solo strings, they are ensembles, beware! However, Enchant! has some of these samples, but we are removing them as quickly as we can.

The C7 is Neo Piano, the Baldwin Upright is believed to be Spectrasonics, the String Ensembles and Brass Instruments are both EWQL and the nylon guitar is from a commercial source.

SGM SF4U EditionMedium sized soundfonts based on the famous SGM soundfont. Created by SoundFonts-4U. Mixed. Features non-free guitars, but no upright piano. Flame Studios SoundfontsSoundfonts of guitars, basses and other instruments. Free. Licensed under GPLV3 with exception (May or may not be compatible with the Freepats exception).

The exception:

"This license means that you can do what you like with them but if you create any samples from them or improve on them then you have to use the same license in your projects. This way it keeps it open source (and therefore free). This license is only concerned with the source code. Any music you create with them is nothing to do with me (i.e. you take all the royalties and use whatever license you like).
"

Compare with the Freepats exception:

"
As a special exception, if you create a composition which uses these sounds, and mix these sounds or unaltered portions of these sounds into the composition, these sounds do not by themselves cause the entire composition as a whole to be covered by the GNU General Public License. This exception does not however invalidate any other reasons why the composition might be covered by the GNU General Public License.

If you modify these sounds, you may extend this exception to your version of the sounds, but you are not obligated to do so. If you do not wish to do so, delete this exception statement from your version."

Therefore, unlike the Freepats exception, we interpret that things under GPL with Flamestudios exception must keep the exception, meanwhile the Freepats exception may be removed at anytime.

CC-BY-SA 4.0 is one way compatible with GPLV3. This means that CC-BY-SA 4.0 samples may be used in GPLV3 works, but GPLV3 samples cannot be used in CC-BY-SA 4.0 works; the whole work must be licensed under GPLV3.
The Free Art License 1.3 is incompatible with the GPLV3. Therefore, Free Art License 1.3 samples cannot be used in GPLV3 works, even though it is bidirectionally compatible with CC-BY-SA 4.0.
The same can be said for CC-BY-SA 3.0. CC-BY-SA 3.0 samples can be used in CC-BY-SA 4.0 works, however, they cannot be used in GPLV3 works, even though CC-BY-SA 4.0 is compatible with GPLV3.
CC-BY 2.5 and earlier are incompatible with DFSG (Debian Free Software Guidelines).
The Flamestudios GPL exception is believed to be incompatible with the Freepats GPL exception. Do not mix Freepats exception licensed items with Flamestudios exception licensed items.
GPLV2 is incompatible with GPLV3, so do not use GPLV2 samples without the "or later". If the samples to be used are licensed under "GPLV1 or later" or "GPLV2 or later", it can be used under GPLV3.
If there is no license, the default license is "All Rights Reserved".
Even though a Soundfont may be Public Domain, there could be unrealistic third party samples. It may be desirable to avoid using these third party samples for compositions.
When copyleft licenses are used, an exception must be used, otherwise the composition must be licensed under the same copyleft license.
If an incorrect license is used on Musical Artifacts, don't forget to contact LFZ to get the license changed.
Should there be non-free samples, the item is a gray area.
