One Today

Richard Blanco read his poem "One Today" for President Obama's second inauguaration. He pictured one day across America. These are the final two stanzas. You can find the whole poem here.

One sky, toward which we sometimes lift our eyes
tired from work: some days guessing at the weather
of our lives, some days giving thanks for a love
that loves you back, sometimes praising a mother
who knew how to give, or forgiving a father
who couldn't give what you wanted.

We head home: through the gloss of rain or weight
of snow, or the plum blush of dusk, but always -- home,
always under one sky, our sky. And always one moon
like a silent drum tapping on every rooftop
and every window, of one country -- all of us --
facing the stars
hope -- a new constellation
waiting for us to map it,
waiting for us to name it -- together.

May you find time this summer to look up at our one sky
and rejoice in our one world.

Poem of the week
Each week this summer we are posting a poem on Keeping Faith Today—Sister Joan’s blog. This week’s poem is by Sister Alice Smith, CSJ, who taught Joan all she knows about writing. Thank you, Sister Alice!
Happy Memorial Day weekend to all of you.

Mother and ChildMary of Nazareth

Mary Queen of Heaven is a mighty queen,
but Mary of Nazareth was a queen no less,
although Nazareth folk never dreamed they had seen
in the carpenter's house a queen in working dress;
a queen sweeping a floor or laying a table,
or washing the supper things at fall of night.
And even had they watched,
they would not have been able
to see the angel who came in a cloud of light,
an angel with great eyes aflame with wonder
who knelt before this girl and spoke to her.
The sound of his voice was more terrible than thunder,
but she was not terrified. She did not stir.
And when she spoke, the angel bowed his head,
knowing what power moved in the word she said.

~ Sister Alice Smith, CSJ

Our Confirmation program recognizes Catholic teens have the Holy Spirit.

ServiceConfirmation
Confirmation doesn’t confer the Holy Spirit on our teens. It gives them the opportunity to choose to live in the gifts of that Spirit.

Moving in the Spirit (sr. high) and Giver of Life (jr. high) are short, easy-to-use Confirmation programs that celebrate the Spirit working in our Catholic teens.

May you be alive to the Holy Spirit in your own life this Pentecost.

Wake Up Your Heart

Heart-waking is the word Sister Alice Smith invents to describe spring and Easter poetically in the sonnet below. Theologically the God who creates and sustains the cosmos is the God who raised up Jesus to new life and promises us lasting friendship. Liturgically Lent moves toward spring and Easter. In the northern hemisphere flowers and budding trees revive the human spirit in sync with Jesus' wholehearted outpouring of his love in his passion and the new eighth day of creation of his resurrection.

A very blessed Easter to you from all of us at Good Ground Press.

APRIL SONNET
The austerity of winter dwindles now;
green leafbuds bulge, and yellow catkins bloom.
There can be no one unaware of how
the earth puts by the liturgy of gloom
for the heart-waking utterance of spring . . .
The flying cloud possessed by wind and sun;
antiphonals the loosened rivers sing
on greening shores; birds with new nests begun
under sun-brightened eaves or leaf-lipped hedges;
and resurrection of forgotten things:
seedlings and dry cocoons on lonely ledges
turning from dust and dark to leaves and wings.

The paschal candle of the spring is lit
and all the earth is glorified with it.

We wish you a blessed Lent

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, one of the most popular holy days in the church year. Most of us will try to get to church during the day to receive a cross of ashes on our foreheads. If you are unable to do that, use this prayer service to begin Lent.

Gather with your family or in a communal space in your building or with other friends and neighbors. You can create ashes by burning some palm from last year's Palm Sunday, or a small piece of paper or fabric. All you need for the prayer service is someone to lead and someone to read the scripture.

Prayer symbolLeader: Loving God, be with us as we begin the holy season of Lent.
All: Loving God, be with us.
Reader: St. Paul tells us "God has sent the Holy Spirit into our hearts. The Spirit urges us from deep inside to say, 'Abba, my father.' We are no longer slaves. We are God's sons and daughters."
Leader: During Lent we want to grow closer to you, Abba, our father, and to be more loving to one another. These ashes are a sign of the commitments we make to keep Lent.

Pass the dish of ashes around. Each person dips his or her thumb in the ashes and makes a cross on the forehead of the person on his/her right, saying:

__________ you are a child of God. Make loving choices during Lent.

Ask if people wish to share their commitments. Sing a simple song everyone knows to conclude your prayer.
