STETTLER AND DISTRICT RETIRED TEACHERS'

ASSOCIATION

ARTICLE I – NAME

Section 1 The name of the organization will be the Stettler and District Retired Teachers' Association (SDRTA).

Section 2 The address and telephone number shall be those of the Secretary and Treasurer.

ARTICLE II – OBJECTIVES

Section 1 To appoint a representative to the Alberta Retired Teachers' Association (ARTA).

Section 2 To inform local members of the activities of the ARTA.

Section 3 To explore and discuss ways and means of improving and protecting the welfare of our members.

Section 4 To generate a prestige and influence which will give the Association a recognized weight of opinion.

Section 5 To maintain recognition in order to qualify for group contract rates where available.

Section 6 To maintain a group which will meet for social enjoyment.

ARTICLE III – MEMBERSHIP

Section 1 Member

The Stettler and District Retired Teachers' Association will accept into full membership with voting power, any retired teacher who is receiving a pension from the Alberta Retirement Fund, Barnett House, Edmonton, Alberta.

Section 2 Associate Member

a) The Stettler and District Retired Teachers' Association will accept as associate members:

i. The spouse of any teacher described above;

ii. The spouse of a deceased retired teacher;

iii Former Alberta teachers who are of pensionable age and are not in receipt of a pension;

iv Any retired teacher of pensionable age from another province who is living in the Stettler and district area;

v. The spouse of any teacher described in (iv) above;

vi. Retired employees of school jurisdictions in Stettler and surrounding area;

vii. Any person eligible for an affiliate membership with ARTA.

b) Associate members will have restricted voting power as follows:

i. Full voting power on matters of local concern;

ii. No voting power on matters relating to ARTA.

c) Associate members will not be eligible for election to the Executive but may sit on committees.

ARTICLE IV – MEETINGS

Section 1 The Annual General Meeting shall be held no later than September 30, at which time an election of Officers for the coming year will take place.

Section 2 The President, with the support of the Executive, shall have the power to decide the dates and nature of the meetings as they think necessary.

ARTICLE V – OFFICERS

Section 1 The Executive Officers of the SDRTA shall be elected annually at the Annual General Meeting.

Section 2 The Executive shall consist of the following:

● President

● Vice-President

● Past President

● Secretary/Membership Coordinator

● Treasurer

● Any member of the SDRTA who is an officer of the ARTA Executive and/or the ARTA Pension or Benefits Committees

Section 3 Only those members qualifying for membership under Article III, Section 1 shall be eligible for election to any Executive position.

Section 4 None of the officers defined in Article V, Section 2, shall receive any form of remuneration for his or her services. However, Officers of the Association shall be reimbursed for any authorized expenditure necessary for carrying out the business of the Association.

Section 5 The Executive shall have the power to set up committees to carry out specific projects of the organization.

ARTICLE VI – QUORUM

Section 1 A quorum for the purpose of dealing with the business of the Association at a regularly called meeting shall be the Officers of the Executive and members who are present.

ARTICLE VII – DUES AND FINANCES

Section 1 Membership fees shall be determined from time to time, by the general membership on recommendation by the Executive.

Section 2 Membership and financial reports shall be presented at the Annual General Meeting.

ARTICLE VIII – CONDUCT OF MEETINGS

Section 1 Parliamentary procedure shall be observed at all meetings of the Association.

ARTICLE IX – FINANCIAL YEAR

Section 1 The financial year shall be September 1 to August 31.

ARTICLE X – AMENDMENTS

Section 1 These by-laws may be amended at any regular or special meeting of the Association by an affirmative vote of two-thirds of the members present and voting, provided that notice of the motion has been given at the previous meeting.
