New In Version 1.5

New features include:

  • It is now possible to select the image with which the others will be aligned. If you have an image where you like the way the stars are lined up with things on the ground you can select this image to be the one that the others are aligned with.
  • There is a check box at the bottom of the open panel to force classification table to be displayed.
  • In the classification table, clicking on a column heading now changes the classification of each image that can be change to that classification. (Only images that can be changed are changed. I.e., if an image does not have an alpha chanel, it cannot be a mask).
  • Four different compositions are computed and can be saved. The controls for saving files have been redesigned. The goal is to give the user choices in how the result looks. In particular, by saving images composited with both the Max and Median algorithms, and then blending them in a image editing tool, it becomes possible to have low-noise images with meteors and/or satellites. (You could also recover all of the airplane tracks if you want).
  • If any images cannot be aligned, those images are ignored and the rest are composited. (Earlier versions of SLS would stop if any of the images could not be aligned).
  • The alignment algorithm is much more tolerant of widely varying sensor and lens characteristics (provided Exif information is included in the images).
  • The alignment algorithm works better with images that have a lot of noise.
  • Improved efficiency of memory usage--typically more than a 50% reduction in peak memory usage when compared to SLS 1.4.5. It should be possible to process a stack of 50 images of 50 mega pixels each on a machine with 16 GB of memory.
  • Performance improvements--typically more than 2x faster alignment than SLS 1.4.5.
  • Huge improvement in redraw performance resulting in much faster scrolling, zooming, painting, erasing and adjustment of viewing parameters.
  • The sliders controlling viewing parameters (brightness, contrast, mask opacity) now return to the default value when double clicked.
  • Saved images without the mask no longer have an alpha channel, reducing file size by 25%.
