June 2013 Update :

The second Annual General Meeting of the Community Shop Society was held on April17th. Shareholders were told of the progress made so far. Mainly thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, the building fund now exceeds £70,000 and the lease agreement with the Village Hall is all but completed. The Committee is confident of gaining a further £40,000 through the Plunkett Foundation and is applying for funds from Magnox for shop fittings and refrigeration. The evaluation of the tenders for the building continues.

We are grateful to the Quantock Hill AONB Service which, since the AGM, has awarded our project £2,500.

The committee recently visited 3 excellent community shops in Devon. They were chosen because each was a new-build, but they were very different in style and approach. Each was run by a very enthusiastic team some of whom were on hand to answer our many questions. A lot was learnt about the construction, layout and stocking of community shops, but the main lesson learnt was the importance of the volunteers. Each of the Devon shops was in a settlement smaller than Spaxton and 2 of them had supermarkets less than 3 miles away. Their success was based on locally produced food, community spirit and the fact that they could sell some goods cheaper than those supermarkets. We see no reason why Spaxton cannot have a shop at least as successful as those we visited.

We are getting close to the time when more help will be needed. There are still a couple of vacancies on the committee. We would also like to hear from anyone interested in becoming a part-time, paid manager for the shop.
