The Spaxton Community Shop project has reached an important milestone. Plans and paperwork have been agreed and contracts signed. Immediately after the Flower Show Harris Brothers and Collard Ltd will start building the new shop. This work is planned to take 12 weeks and so the building should be finished in late October. After that there will be a few weeks for decoration and fitting-out, so we will fix the opening date nearer the time.

We are aware that for many people the Post Office service is at least as important as the shop. This is still proving difficult to negotiate. Post Office Ltd will not continue the type of contract enjoyed by our present postmaster and the alternatives offered are difficult to run with a staff which is mostly volunteers. POL is now showing a little more flexibility and we are still confident that we will be able to provide an alternative when Tony finally closes the current post office. Much depends on how many volunteers wish to be trained to operate a post office counter.

Over the last 4 years the two main concerns have been raising money and, when it was clear that we had enough funds, sourcing the building. It has been a bumpy road but we now know that we will have a building next to the Village Hall car park. The committee is relieved to have got this far but really this is just the start. Now there are many more things to get sorted out.

As you see the building take shape please consider how you can help. Could you help with the decoration, serving, cleaning, book-keeping, liaising with suppliers, stock-checks, publicity, designing the staff uniform!? The list is a lot longer.

If you can help or would like more information please contact one of the committee members listed below.
