Leon Trotsky: Clave’s Statement on Rivera’s Resignation

January 17, 1939

[Writings of Leon Trotsky, Vol 11, 1938-1938, New York ²1974, p. 279]

The editorial board of Clave does not know and thus cannot enter into an analysis of the circumstances which provoked the resignation of Comrade Diego Rivera, but in view of our complete theoretical and political solidarity we are sure that these circumstances cannot be other than of a secondary and transitory nature. However, the resignation in itself can provoke a very disadvantageous impression and thus prejudice our common cause. That is why we cannot accept Comrade Diego Rivera's resignation.

We propose that if it is absolutely necessary, a leave of absence can be granted him for one or two months, on the firm conviction that Comrade Rivera will continue an uninterrupted collaboration, which is highly appreciated by the editorial board as well as by all serious readers.
