English music with a gold medal performance

posted 11 Sep 2015, 01:44 by St Peter Woking

CELEBRATED violin and piano duo Rupert Marshall-Luck and Matthew Rickard present an evening of English music at the beautiful and historic church of St Peter’s.
St Peter’s Church, based in Old Woking, Surrey reaches the twentieth in a series of classical music evenings on Saturday 3 October at 7.30pm.
This fourth concert of 2015 will feature a performance of the Gallipoli Sonata by Olympic gold medal rower Frederick Kelly – a work composed in a tent on the front line in World War I and which features on Rupert and Matthew’s latest CD recording for the EM Records label, Dream Shadows.
The concert will also a feature a suite and a sonata by Sir Hubert Parry – best known as the composer of Jerusalem – and will finish with the second violin sonata of Herbert Howells, which contains of the most beautiful slow movements in the whole of the English violin repertory.
Rupert and Matthew frequently give concerts all over the UK and have also performed together in France, Holland and Ireland. The duo have recorded several CDs together for EM Records, which have received glowing reviews from publications such as BBC Music Magazine, Gramophone, International Record Review and The Strad. One critic described the duo’s playing as “fiery, to the point of molten”, while another stated that “Marshall-Luck and Rickard offer an ideal combination of enterprising programming, some impressive musical archaeology to bring these works to life, and superb playing”. Rupert and Matthew recently made their second appearance and performance on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune programme.
A historic 12th Century church, St Peter’s offers a serene and beautiful interior, a fine 17th Century gallery and excellent acoustics for chamber concerts.
As ever, tickets for St Peter’s concerts will be £10 and can be purchased on-line from or on the door and children under 16 are very welcome to attend FREE OF CHARGE.
