Job Descriptions

PRODUCER 
     a) to prepare and submit the production budget to the Board of Directors for approval 
     b) to engage people to head each department 
     c) to staff each department, in association with the Production Manager, if appointed 
     d) to describe the function of each department to its head, outlining policies, responsibilities and duties 
     e) to provide moral, resource and problem-solving support to each department head to ensure that they are
     able to complete their responsibilities on time and in accordance with SVYT policies 
     f) to ensure that the budget is maintained and that department heads operate within their departmental
     budgets 
     g) to ensure compliance with all copyright and contract conditions 
     h) to approve all production expenses 
     i) to conduct regularly scheduled production meetings with all department heads
     j) to report monthly to the Board on the progress of the production, and to submit a final financial report
     immediately following the end of the production 

 ARTISTIC DIRECTOR 
     a) to cast the show in conjunction with the musical director and the choreographer 
     b) to clearly communicate the design concepts to the various designers and to all department heads 
     c) to create the rehearsal schedule with the assistance of the musical director, the choreographer and the
     stage manager 
     d) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     e) to attend all rehearsals 
     f) to attend all production meetings 
     g) to provide the producer with regular progress reports 
     h) to be available on a regular basis to all members of the cast and crew 
     i) to maintain responsibility for the production successfully reaching the stage 
     j) to ensure compliance with all copyright and contract conditions 

 MUSICAL DIRECTOR 
     a) to cast the show in conjunction with the artistic director and the choreographer 
     b) to prepare the cast musically 
     c) to assemble, prepare and manage the necessary musicians 
     d) to musically conduct the show and the assembled musicians 
     e) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     f) to attend all production meetings 
     g) to attend all scheduled rehearsals, including every rehearsal held in the theater 
     h) to maintain a liaison with the artistic director in order to support the artistic vision of the production 
     i) to provide the producer with regular progress reports
     j) to distribute to the musicians all orchestral scores and/or parts as provided by the stage manager 
     k) to collect from the musicians all orchestral scores and/or parts at the end of the production and to ensure
     their good condition 
     l) to ensure compliance with all copyright and contract conditions 

 CHOREOGRAPHER 
     a) to cast the show in conjunction with the artistic director and the musical director 
     b) to design the dance numbers and other stage movements to coincide with the artistic vision of the
     production 
     c) to teach the cast the dance numbers and stage movements 
     d) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     e) to attend all scheduled rehearsals 
     f) to attend all production meetings 
     g) to maintain a liaison with the artistic director in order to support the artistic vision of the production 
     h) to provide the producer with regular progress reports 
     i) to ensure compliance with all copyright and contract conditions 

 STAGE MANAGER 
     a) to organize the audition process in association with the artistic director 
     b) to communicate the rehearsal schedule, and all amendments, to the cast and crew 
     c) to record blocking notes and prepare the "running script" 
     d) to mark the rehearsal space by identifying the location of the edges of the set and the various set pieces 
     e) to ensure that the department heads are constantly informed of the needs of the artistic director e.g.     
     properties, wardrobe, lighting, etc. 
     f) to train and supervise assistant stage managers as required 
     g) to attend all rehearsals 
     h) to attend all production meetings
     i) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     j) to maintain responsibility for the security and compliance with all house rules and procedures of the rented
     theater/rehearsal space and be ‘first in – last out’ of each 
     k) to ensure compliance with all Health and Safety rules 
     l) to ensure that all technical components function properly during the run of the production 
     m) to maintain responsibility for the running of each performance after the final dress rehearsal 
     n) to maintain decorum and discipline during rehearsals and performances    
     o) to provide the producer with regular progress reports 

 REHEARSAL ACCOMPANIST 
     a) to play the piano (or other agreed upon instrument) during the scheduled rehearsals 
     b) to lead the sectional rehearsals as required 
     c) to play the piano (or other agreed upon instrument) during auditions, if required 

 HEAD COSTUMER 
     a) to co-ordinate the wardrobe requirements in accordance with the artistic vision of the production 
     b) to maintain a liaison with other department heads to ensure a unified appearance to the production 
     c) to provide all necessary wardrobe measurements of the cast and to co-ordinate fittings 
     d) to ensure availability of rented commercial-grade sewing machine(s) as required 
     e) to maintain a wardrobe inventory and ensure proper packaging of wardrobe for shipping at end of 
     production, as required 
     f) to attend all production meetings 
     g) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     h) to build, borrow or rent the necessary costumes in accordance with the artistic vision of the production 
     i) to supervise the dressers and seamstresses 

 MAKEUP DESIGNER 
     a) to design the cast makeup, in conjunction with the artistic director 
     b) to procure the necessary make-up required for the cast in order to complement the artistic vision of the 
     production 
     c) to supervise the make-up crew 
     d) to supervise the actors in applying some of their own make-up 
     e) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     f) to attend all production meetings 
     g) to provide the producer with regular progress reports 
   
 HAIR DESIGNER 
     a) to provide hairstyles for the cast that complement the artistic vision of the production 
     b) to supervise the hairstylists 
     c) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     d) to attend all production meetings 
     e) to provide the producer with regular progress reports 

 PROPS MANAGER 
     a) to consult with the artistic director and compile a list of all required properties 
     b) to consult with the costume designer, the set designer and the lighting designer to ensure that the 
     properties complement the artistic vision of the production 
     c) to provide ‘rehearsal’ props so that the actors can become familiar with them 
     d) to borrow, build, rent or purchase the necessary properties 
     e) to prepare a props table (upon moving into theater) with labels identifying location of all props 
     f) to position props on the set for each rehearsal and performance, as required. 
     g) to maintain props during the run of the show and to ensure proper hygiene 
     h) to return borrowed or rented props at end of production and ensure proper storage of those remaining in 
     SVYT ownership 
     i) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     j) to attend all production meetings 
     k) to provide the producer with regular progress reports 

 SET DESIGNER 
     a) to design the set for the production, in conjunction with the artistic director 
     b) to consult with the costume designer, the head of properties and the lighting designer to ensure that the 
     set complements the artistic vision of the production 
     c) to provide a drawing of the set, to scale, and, if possible, a model or rendering 
     d) to supervise the construction and the painting of the set 
     e) to supervise the assembly of the set in the theater 
     f) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     g) to attend production meetings, as required 
     h) to provide the producer with regular progress reports 

 MASTER CARPENTER 
     a) to interpret the set design and prepare an appropriate construction plan 
     b) to prepare a list of required construction materials 
     c) to supervise the building and the painting of the set 
     d) to transport the set to the theater and supervise its assembly in association with the set designer 
     e) to supervise the striking of the set and ensure either its return SVYT storage or its disposal, as 
     appropriate 
     f) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     g) to attend production meetings as needed
     h) to provide the producer with regular progress reports 

 TECH MANAGER 
     a) to borrow, rent or purchase sound equipment, including microphones, for the production, as required 
     b) to provide microphone expertise for the actors and the crew 
     c) to operate the sound board during required rehearsals and the performances 
     d) to maintain sound equipment during the run of the production 
     e) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     f) to attend production meetings as required 
     g) to provide the producer with regular progress reports 
     h) to attend all technical rehearsals 
     i) to design the lighting for the show, in conjunction with the artistic director 
     j) to review the lighting inventory that is available in the theater and maximize its use 
     k) to determine any additional lighting requirements necessary to the production 
     l) to supervise the hanging, focus and strike of all lighting instruments/equipment 
     m) to train the lighting board and the follow spot operators 
     n) to maintain the integrity of the approved production budget 
     o) to ensure compliance with all Health and Safety Rules
