Labor Day 2014 Regatta Results

Seven boats competed in the 2014 Labor Day Regatta that was characterized by a light north west wind, with big shifts to the west punctuated with periods of no wind. As a result, it was the kind of day that posed challenges to sailors of all levels. There were four races in all. Harry Flad & Steve Kovacs captured first place in their Dolphin 17 with one first place finish, two seconds, and a fourth, a total of nine points. They just edged past two excellent sailors who were poised to unequivocally capture first place. Sally Sharp & Gary Orkney were in an O'Day Javelin with four first place finishes, but during the last race, the Gods of Lake Mascoma surrounded them with a windless hole that followed them most of the way around the course, ending their series with a last place finish. And that was just enough to take them from first place to second by a single point. Joe & Cathy Gasparik, along with Ron Putnam took third place with a solid performance in the Flying Scott that included two second place finishes, finishing with fifteen points. This gave them the edge over fourth place finishers, Reg Jones & Cathy Geiger, who also finished with fifteen points but whose best finish was in third place. Scott and Ruth Conwell came in fifth with nineteen points. Sailing a large sloop in light air is very challenging, but the Conwells know how to make their Catalina 22 move even in light air. In sixth place, Beth, Aaron, and Sage scored twenty two points in the Rhodes 19 with third and fifth place finishes, just edging out Dave Beaufait & Geoff Smith in the Sunbird who also scored twenty two points but had a third and six place finish.
