2016 Labor Day Regatta Results

The afternoon started out with promise - during the skipper's meeting at 12:30 a nice breeze filled in, but as soon as we went out to set the marks, there was no breeze. But there was a breath of air, enough to set a short windward-leeward course with the windward mark toward the west side of the lake. How light was it? It was so light that people had to ask which was the windward mark. The first race was not so bad - it was slow, but not a drifter. The race lasted about 20 minutes with Gary & Sally taking first, followed by Richard & Chris in the Lightning, with the Joe and Ron in the Flying Scot right behind them. We were also treated to some spinnaker action from Team Ross in the first race. The second race tried the patience of many a sailor. The wind died out soon after the start. Andre & Sasha were on the left side of the course with a bit of momentum and some clear air, and it looked like they would leave everyone for dead. But when they got to the windward mark they ran out of gas. Meanwhile, Richard and Chris, who were on the right side of the course, got a breath of air and were off to the windward mark. Soon after there was enough wind (bending to the south) to get the rest of the fleet moving. In the end, the second race took 15 minutes longer than the first race. By this time a nice breeze finally came up - from the south. Without enough time to shift the course, the race committee decided to run the last race despite the skewed course. But at least there was wind to sail in for a change. The top finishers in the final race, Gary & Sally, Team Ross, and Team Bakker, had elapsed times of under 10 minutes. And there was a nice fresh breeze to bring everyone back to the club.

Our top contenders were in a tight race. Gary & Sally finished just half a point ahead of Andre & Sasha Bakker, with Richard Balaguer & Chris Ian taking third place just a point behind. Team Ross were just a point behind in 4th place, sailing the Dartmouth Rhodes 19 that was purchased and named in memory of Mike Ross. Jay Whitehair sailed very consistently in his Javelin 15, taking 4th place in all three races, which put him 5th overall. It was great having so many people competing in the regatta - Thanks to all of you for hanging in there!!!

Special thanks to Betty Ann Heisted and her son Per, who not only managed the grill but rescued us from a propane deficit. And thanks to everyone who brought side dishes, salads, (and chili!) to the BBQ potluck.

Results are final as of September 5
