(Revised narrative!)

We had a great day of sailing with a strong variable wind out of the north and west, with some big gusts rolling down the lake just to make it interesting. We had eight boats competing with a number of very close races, and a great time was had by all.

Dick Lathrop and Judy Saide took first place in their Daysailor. Dick is a great sailor and sailing ambassador. It was a real treat to have him sail with us, as he managed the summer sailing club at Dartmouth for many years and introduced many kids and adults to the joys of sailing. Bill Fontaine strategically sailed an old Javelin with a killer Portsmouth number that allowed him to take second place. Point-wise, he was tied in second place at 13 points with Andre & Pascal Bakker in their Mariner 19. Lucky for Bill, the tie was broken by his having finished ahead of the 3rd place Mariner 19 in three of the four races, because in the final race, the Bakkers finished in first place leaving Bill for dead. He finished 7th after an ill-advised attempt to start on port tack one too many times. Gary Orkney & Steve Foltz in the Rhodes 19 finished in fourth place with 15 points, their best race being the 3rd in which they came in second. In fifth place was Joe Gasparik and Wendell Smith in their Flying Scot, concluding the series with a strong 3rd place finish. In sixth place was Reg Jones & Dave Beaufait in the Hunter. They narrowly captured 4th place in the second race ahead of the Rhodes 19 by a mere three seconds (corrected elapsed time). In seventh place, Steve Kovacs, Harry & Adam Flad sailed the Dolphin with a 4th place finish in the first race. Finally, though in last place, the Tingles had some good races, capped by a strong 4th place finish in race number four.

Special thanks to Sally Sharp, who ran the committee boat so all of us could race! And thanks to Betty Ann Heistad for dropping off the supplies for the grill. Sally & Gary made sure the drinks cooler was stocked & iced. Reg Jones brought over his tent canopies just in case there was rain. And as usual, people brought some wonderful dishes to share at the potluck BBQ. Many thanks to all of you!!!

And a final thanks for the Griesbach family, who donated the Rhodes 19 to the club. It's a great boat and we're thankful for their generous gift every time we sail it!

For the individual race tables, the BCE column indicates the time a boat needed to shave off its elapsed time to win. The BCR column shows what one's Portsmouth handicap would need to be to win - the closer the BCR is to one's Portsmouth rating, the better one is sailing.
