Thomas M. Corcoran

Engineer of the Year 2016, SEAW Seattle President 2014; President's Award 2016, 2014, 2013Born in Pierre, South Dakota in 1954, Tom Corcoran has had a fascination with and passion for developing forms and shapes from the time his dad cut Lincoln Logs from scraps of wood. He received a BS in Architectural Design Drafting from the University of South Dakota at Springfield in 1977. He soon realized his true passion for designing and integrating structure to accommodate architecture. He earned his BS in Civil Engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, with structural engineering post-graduate studies at Purdue University.

Tom started his career as a Project Engineer at Dana Larson Roubal & Associates, in Pierre, SD. He left for DLR/John Graham Associates in Seattle, and in 1992 joined Integrus Architecture. He left Integrus to begin a private practice in Bellevue, returning to DLR Group for two years. Following a three-year stint at Carter & Burgess, Tom again joined Integrus Architecture, a Structural Principal since 2004.

Tom takes particular pride in projects including Eastside Catholic High School, located in Sammamish, and the Boeing 777 Office building located in Everett. Travelling across an ocean to Honolulu brought Tom to another of his favorite projects, the third-floor addition to the Ala Moana shopping center.

Engineering has inspired Tom to create enduring structures that complement architecture. To Tom, each project tells a unique story, yet they all require successful collaboration and integration between architecture and structure. This philosophy has served Tom well for 30 years.

A voting member on two committees for The Masonry Society, and a past corresponding member for the BSSC TS7 Wood Technical Committee, Tom also holds membership in the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Puget Sound Energy Council Speaker’s Bureau, and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institution. The only engineer in the Puget Sound area qualified as a Building Safety Emergency Responder for the Washington Association of Building Officials, Tom also holds credentials as a Trained Engineer for the ATC-20 Post Earthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings, and as an emergency worker/building inspector for the King County Department of Development and Environmental Services.

An active SEAW member for 20+ years, in 2013 Tom served on the SEAW Seattle Board of Directors as Vice President, and chaired the SEAW Liaison Task Group. The 2013 President's Award recognizes his work with the Committee Liaison Task Group. He also serves on the board of the Structural Engineers Foundation of Washington.
