The Sons of Confederate Veterans proudly awards the H.L. Hunley JROTC award to deserving cadets in Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine JROTC programs across the nation.  The award is named for the CSS H.L. Hunley, the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy warship.  Although the award has a naval theme, it is appropriate for presentation to Army and Air Force recipients.  The CSS H.L. Hunley was commanded by 1st Lt. George Dixon, an Infantry officer.  The crew was made up of volunteers from both the Confederate Army and Navy.

In Arizona, applications for the award are managed by the Arizona Division Adjutant.   The military instructors for a particular school's JROTC program select the recipient based on the following criteria.

* Demonstrated  leadership position within the JROTC unit
* Have a well rounded high school career to include sports, music, art or other extra curricular activities
* Maintain an accepted level of physical fitness
* Exhibit the traits of Honor, Courage and Commitment

The award consists of a certificate suitable for framing, a full size medal and a ribbon for wear with a standard ribbon rack.

Military instructors:  To receive an information packet and application, contact the Arizona Division Adjutant or call 520-456-6956.   Applications should be submitted to the Adjutant in sufficient time for the award to be delivered to your school prior to the awards ceremony.  Applications may be submitted via email to the address above or mailed to:
