How to use Sc2gears

Be sure to also check out the Sc2gears Videos.

On this page you can see different use cases of Sc2gears. The question is what do you want to use Sc2gears for?

Showcasing the full potential of Sc2gears is beyond my purpose, this page only shows the most common tasks.

Auto-save and auto-rename my replays

If you want Sc2gears to auto-save your replays, you just have to run it while you play. Be sure to "Enable replay auto-save" in the Settings menu (it is enabled by default). Optionally you can minimize Sc2gears to tray if you'd like to. Also you might want to enable "Minimize to tray on Close" in the Window menu to prevent closing Sc2gears accidently and therefore losing replays (by not getting auto-saved). If you're lazy or you forget to start Sc2gears before you play StarCraft II, you can set to "Start minimized to tray" in the Window menu, and place a shortcut in your Windows Startup menu pointing to Sc2gears.exe.

If the auto-save function works properly, you should hear a "Replay saved" voice after your games (you can disable the voices if it bothers you, but it's recommended just to turn down the volume in this case).

If you want to change the name of the auto-saved replays, you have to edit the "Replay auto-save name template". Go to the "Miscellaneous settings" in the Settings menu.

You can edit the template manually, but it is recommended to click on the "Edit" button which will bring up a template editor component. You will see what symbols you can use. Clicking on them will also insert it to the current template. You can test the template on the last replay.

If your StarCraft II auto-replay folder is not at the default location, you have to tell Sc2gears where it is so it can look for new replays in the right folder. To view/change StarCraft II's default auto-rep folder go to"Folder settings" in the Settings menu. Here you can set where StarCraft II saves your last replay (SC2 auto replay folder), and where you want your replays saved (Replay auto-save folder).

Create replay sources and lists

A replay source is a set of folders and files which define a set of replays that are inside the listed folders or are explicitly added to the replay source. You can create a replay source by starting a new replay search: left side of the window double click on the "<new>" item under Replay search:

A new replay search window will come up, and the default Search source tab will be selected. You can add folders and files to the replay source:

Once you added the folders and files you want to be included in the replay source, you can save it by clicking on the "Save replay source..." button:

Save it in the folder that comes up by default, because that way it will automatically appear in the navigation tree. For example if you named it "My reps" :

Now you can list all replays denoted by this replay source by clicking on the "List all replays of this source" button:

A new Results tab will appear with a table listing all replays denoted by the replay source. You can save the replay list by pressing the "Save list..." button:

Save it in the folder that comes up by default, because that way it will automatically appear in the navigation tree. For example if you named it "Some replist":

Batch rename replays (rename multiple replays at once)

List the replays of a replay source or replay list (by double clicking on them in the navigation tree), select the replays you want to rename (or press CTRL+A to select all replays), then right click and choose "Rename replays...":

A name template editor will come up. You can rename multiple replays by defining a template with dynamic symbols, and that template will be applied to all replays to create a new name for each. You can preview the new names by pressing the "Preview new names" button, and you can proceed to rename by pressing the "Rename replays" button:

Analyze individual replays

This one is too easy: Just click on the File menu => "Open replay..." and choose the replay you want to analyze.

Or list the replays of a replay source or replay list (by double clicking on them in the navigation tree), and double click on any replay, or select it and press Enter.

Mass analyze replays (Multi-replay analysis)

You can simply right click on the replay source or replay list in the navigation tree, and choose "Open in Multi-replay analysis":

Or list the replays of a replay source or replay list, and click on the "Multi-rep analysis" button which will perform a multi-replay analysis on all listed replays:

If you want to perform a multi-replay analysis only on a few replays, you can select the replays and press Enter, or right click with the mouse and choose "Open in multi-replay analysis":
