Data Mining in Excel

Here are a few tools in Excel that will let you build some data mining models using your data. These are Excel files with VBA macros. And these are freeware. Using them you can build following three types of models
  1. CTree - Builds Classification Tree (using a version of C4.5 algorithm)
  2. NNClass - Builds Classification Models (using feedforward-backpropagation Neural Network)
  3. NNPred - Builds Prediction Models (using feedforward-backpropagation Neural Network)
A little bit of history...
I created these tools around 2001. They were available through Yahoo Geocities. Over the years many people used them and wrote back to me. The feedback were mostly positive. And I was amazed by the variety of problems on which people used them. A few years back Geocities closed down and these tools were not available. I kept on getting requests for them.

So here they are. One more thing. About 50% of the mails I used to get, had request to remove password for the VBA code. So I have made them open now. You can see the code. Modify, improve, edit as you see fit. You may use them in your classroom or just to play with the models.

A few comments of caution here...
These are not industrial strength data mining software. They work on small to mid-sized data. They are written on Excel 97 and later tested on Excel 2003. I have no idea whether they will work on Excel 2010. See if you can make them work.

I am interested to see people use these tools and modify them to make them better. I'd love to hear from you, on your experience with the tools.
