***Required Dancewear for Classes***

Dancers are asked to show up for class prepared, with proper shoes and clothes, ready to dance. It is important to dress like a dancer, as it encourages professionalism. Dressing poorly also hinders the feedback you receive from your instructors...they can't see your legs behind sweatpants, you can't "feel the floor" with socks in your jazz shoes, and you can't turn with hair in your eyes.
Dancers should keep a few of the necessities in their dance bags, including a spare pair of tights, bun-making supplies, and a water bottle. It is unacceptable to use your dance time to finish getting dressed and to do your hair. If a dancer shows up unprepared to dance and/or looking unprofessional, they will be asked to watch the lesson. Repeat offenders may have to sign a "dressed for success" contract with their parents and instructors.

RWDS Class Requirements 2016-17

Bethany’s Class Requirements:

BALLET:

HAIR: All ballet students MUST wear their hair in a neat bun with bangs pulled and pinned out of face.

Ponytail hairstyle is not acceptable.*** if time to do the hairstyle is a problem parents/students you need to plan ahead for ballet class day as students may require buns worn to school for those coming to studio directly afterwards or arrange someone to do your Childs hair.   Young students as young as 9-10 years old are capable to learn to do their own hair, parents must take the time to practise or teach them. The goal is not perfection, it is an expectation, responsibility and discipline for all ballet classes.

Basic supplies needed is a good hair brush and fine comb, strong ponytail holders, bobby-pins (you will use lots of them open and closed pins) and you can buy a bun net or hairnet to hold the hair into position and secure with many pins.  Some choose water to spray hair first, some also use gel or hairspray to keep fly away strands out of their faces.  If the hair is too short it must be braided or pinned securely away from their face. There are bun accessory items that are available in blonde and brunette colors (Ardene’s, Claire’s, Sally Beauty, Walmart or dance supply stores) A foam BUN type form and a bun twist accessory is also an option you can buy, it makes a quick fast 3 minute bun style comes in three sizes (very small too large for girls with lots of hair). Ask any member to demonstrate theirs before you buy if you think these items would help you. Like anything it takes practise…

BUN hairstyle is important for teachers to see the dancer’s body as they move, to properly train the correct muscles, maintain good alignment and prevent injuries. The students must learn proper spotting technique in turning, and good posture recognition.  BUNS limit the distractions of playing with hair not listen to directions.  It is a level of standard in ballet discipline as the foundation in core dance class.

CLOTHING:

A fitted body suit without attached skirt/tutu. Color is personal choice of the rainbow…they must be in a suit that will not require adjusting (ex. Straps etc.)

Tights in ballet pink, available at Stage Stars Prince Albert or Dance Street Saskatoon.

***SHOES*** SANSHA Split-Sole Ballet Slipper for all ages. In the color ballet pink.

These slippers are machine washable and lay flat to air dry.  It’s a canvas type slipper with two straps.  The smaller sizes come pre sewn, larger sizes you are expected to sew on your straps. The older students with bigger sizes require sewing of straps as can be sewn properly to the shape of the arch in your foot.  You MUST use matching color thread, if unsure bring your slippers to class and ask for marking of strap placement.

PLEASE NOTE:

Dance clothing, tights, and shoes may be purchased at:

1. RWDS has created and will be selling studio logo team wear clothing. What better way to gain exposure for our studio than for our students to wear screen printed items.  The ordering will be starting in September for those interested, it is optional…

The tanks and ball T-shirts will be worn by the students participating @ the Shellbrook Street Fair.  Items available will be tanks, ball T-shirt, sweats, hoodies, water bottles and go-mugs.

2.  Dance Street Dancewear, Saskatoon

Located @ 1020 Louise Ave in the Grosvenor Park Strip Mall

It is across the Street from MacDonald’s and Sobeys. There is a Starbucks and Booster Juice facing 8th street and Dance Street is near the back of that strip mall facing east.

3. Stage Stars Dance and Theatrical Supplies, Prince Albert

Located within the Performing Arts Warehouse @ 301 13th Street

They likely will have limited ballet and tap shoes in stock but has lots of the dancewear and tights etc. This store has an annual store wide sale every February for ALL in-stock items (dance bags, shoes, clothing, tights, and accessories) are 30% off FYI.

4. Other locations for dancewear are:

**Triple Flip Dancewear (Midtown Mall Saskatoon) ** Ivivva Athletic-wear (#141 2 Ave. N. downtown Saskatoon or online).** Playa-sol Clothing and Active-wear (#783 801 15St. W. Prince Albert, strip mall with Little Caesars)

These are good dancewear, they wear well and last a long time but are pricey so do not feel obligated to purchase from these stores, please consider buying RWDS studio wear by supporting and advertising our studio instead of other brand names.

*Sears and Walmart have some limited dancewear supplies as well.

*Payless Shoes does have tap, ballet shoes and tights but they are not the requested styles of shoes by the teachers FYI.

Dance tights are expensive but are more durable than cheaper brands that are on the market, it is your preference which you choose to purchase. Many older students wear their tights with many holes, rips and snags in them all throughout the year saving the pair of good dance tights to use at picture day, recital, and competitions.

**Expect to buy at least two pairs of dance tights per season.  (2 ballet and 2 jazz)

** A tip when buying dance shoes:

The biggest mistake made is to buy shoes a size bigger for the hope your child can grow into them thus “saving money”.  In fact you do not save money, your child is dancing in improperly fitting shoes which does not aid in good technique, develops poor performance, unusual wear of shoe with improper foot placement and risk of injury.  It is unfortunate when kids’ feet grow throughout the year and outgrow their shoes in younger students especially. Be aware you may have to buy two pairs of shoes in a dance season sometimes.

PLEASE do not buy improperly larger sized shoes Staff at the dance supply stores are a fountain of knowledge, professional skilled and often dancers themselves.  They will properly fit your child to the shoe.  Instead consider thinking for cost recovery be aware that Dance Street Saskatoon will buy back used shoes and re-sell.  You can recover some shoe expenses that way on outgrown small shoes or you can post at studio your used shoes for sale.

That being said, please if your child has out grown their shoes and in need of a new pair of shoes, it is your responsibility to quickly buy shoes within one class time and students to attend class in proper shoes & clothing etc at class. It is not acceptable to have your child come to class for a month “waiting for shoes” Kids do not come to hockey or skating practise without their skates, do not come to class without your dance shoes, thank you...

**Failure to be prepared for any class is subject to RWDS policy and it can result in students being asked to either change or not participate in the class until arrive with appropriate shoes and clothing etc.
