Winners of AEGON Team Tennis Schools Senior Students Finals.

Peter Symonds’ Tennis coach Liz Davies is delighted as the college’s Boy’s Team of Dan West, Henry Pugh, Chris Lee and Josh Pauls have become National Champions by winning the Senior Students National Finals competition at the weekend in the Bolton Arena.

The Symonds squad of four were amongst the final 8 teams through to the AEGON Team Tennis Schools Senior Students Finals.  The round robin format competition held  over the weekend Friday 18th to Saturday 19th March, is unique in that it is only open to players in years 11, 12 or 13 at schools and colleges with a British Tennis rating no higher than a 7.1.

The Symonds players beat their first day opponents Tring School by 4 matches to 2 and Q.E School, Bournemouth by 5 matches to 1.  In both these matches Symonds secured the early 2 doubles victories to give a great platform for the singles matches that followed.  On Saturday they continued to play excellent tennis beating Wilmslow High School by 5 matches to 1 to qualify for the Finals against Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke.  An outstanding “all Hampshire” final followed which was very closely fought.  Particular credit goes to Dan West who with his calm, consistent  and intelligent tennis levelled the match at 3 matches all and then with Josh Pauls won the deciding match tie-break shoot-out to claim the college’s first ever National Tennis title.   Winning the event gives Symonds National tennis ranking points as a school – an excellent achievement

“This is only the second year that the college has entered the competition,” says coach Liz Davies, “and we are all delighted with these results as over 250 teams entered the competition last September. The boys were brilliant and I am so proud of their achievement.”

“We must thank Winchester Tennis & Squash Club for their support of the college team, as without access to their court facilities (both indoor and out) we could not have trained the squad together as much this season given the extreme weather conditions we experienced.  This title belongs to everyone involved in helping the squad.”
