Manta rays vs Devil rays

Manta rays are often confused with their cousins the devil rays.

The easiest way to differentiate these two types of rays is to look at the shape of the head and body:

  •  Mantas have a large, broad head with the mouth positioned in front. Devil rays have a narrower and more apparent head with the mouth located under the “chin”.
  • Devil rays general body shape look “sharper” than the mantas with “pointier” extremities.
  • Devil rays are generally smaller only growing up to 2-3metre across.  Manta rays do not have any tail barb while some species of devil rays do.
