Bunchgrass is new for 2019!

posted Dec 17, 2019, 4:45 PM by Alex Anderson

After nursing this 40 year old, handmade structure through a number of brutal winters (and a few near collapses), we have replaced it with a Colorado Yurt Company 20 foot yurt with all the upgrades for the sometimes ridiculous amount of snow the basin gets.  So far the reports are that it is very well insulated and sealed up, with the result that condensation can be an issue.  The dome has a fancy raising system, but please be cautious with it and make certain it is closed upon leaving.  This spacious yurt has 7 foot walls and comfortably sleeps 8.  This was a true labor of love for us and a solid cadre of friends, and please treat it as such!

In order to streamline and simplify the reservation process, we have transitioned to FareHarbor.  They provide a complete reservation process which we hope improves the process for you.  It will greatly improve the reservation process for us, allowing us to provide more assistance if needed to ensure our guests have a great experience.  As always, please let us know if there is any way we can improve your yurting experience!

Steam Mill yurt gets taller

posted Sep 7, 2015, 11:02 AM by Sara G   [ updated Sep 7, 2015, 12:16 PM ]

We recently replaced the Steam Mill yurt in Hell's Kitchen Canyon. The new yurt is the same diameter as the old one (16'), with 7' tall walls, 2 large windows, a full-sized entry door, and a new location for the woodstove. Next year we plan on modifying the wood bunkbeds at Steam Mill to have a double-wide fold-out bed on the bottom of each bunk. Enjoy the tall new yurt!

Green Canyon yurt added to PRST

We're excited that Powder Ridge Ski Touring recently acquired the Green Canyon yurt and will soon be renting it to the general public!  We bought this yurt late in our yurt-prep season, so we are busy assessing the structural integrity of the existing yurt and working out the details of adding this great location to our permit, insurance, etc... but we won't bore you with the details.  Please be patient, and know that we'll post here as soon as we are able to start taking reservations.

LED lanterns replace white gas lanterns

posted Oct 14, 2009, 11:16 PM by Powder Ridge   [ updated Sep 7, 2015, 12:16 PM by Sara G ]

White gas lanterns are wonderful for their nostalgia and light output.  However,  a light source that uses an inflammable liquid and puts out tremendous heat is sketchy in a wood and fabric shelter that keeps out the cold and snow of deep winter.  Therefore, with the recent improvement of LED technology in lanterns, Powder Ridge is stocking two lanterns at each yurt to be used for lighting. Other yurt operations have had great success using these, and we hope you enjoy the light, added safety, and convenience of not having to fill the white gas lanterns.  For now, we are using disposable alkaline batteries but anticipate phasing in rechargeables.  We've done the research, and even disposable batteries are ecologically better than the 5 gallons of white gas used per yurt last season.
