All teams are given a 31 hp Briggs & Stratton engine and a set of Titan tires in order to design an industry ready tractor. A panel of industry professionals then judge each design for innovation, manufacturability, serviceability, maneuverability, safety, sound level and ergonomics. In addition, teams also submit a written design prior to the competition. During the competition, teams must sell their design, in a formal presentation to industry experts playing the role of a corporate management team. Finally, the quarter scale tractors are put to the test in a performance event comprised of four tractor pulls.
Through involvement in the competition, students gain practical experience in the design of drive train systems, tractor performance, 3-D modeling, properties of materials and manufacturing processes. In addition, students also gain valuable experience in leadership, communication, marketing and teamwork.
