Requiem to MH-17

No matter what or whom it is I love,

I say morosely, I’m responsible for sure,

I’m one of those who fired up above

And fell the plane that headed for Lumpur.

There is no other country left for me,

Today, though it is strange and dismal,

I’ve come to share my nationality

With an aggressive, rashly fired missile.

I’m menacing upon the newsstand shelves,

On global headlines, in discussions,

I am, myself, afraid to face myself,

For, after all, I, too, am part of Russians.

I share my nationality with those

Who say, “we didn’t want to” rather curtly,

All those who, in a foreign country, chose

Their targets in the sky without mercy.

It sounds blasphemous and totally amuck -

Banality, delayed, without remorse:

And could it be that you are my bad luck,

My nationality? And likewise, I am yours?

My men, my people, all those who forgot,

Forgave self-killing through and through,

Just yesterday, among you all, I shot

A plane from the Ukrainian pure blue.

Yes, I am one of those whom I abhor,

Whom I still find offensive, foul, unsound -

Those who would like it if the rest had more

Planes taking off than landing on the ground.

They shot, who gladly posted with persistence

On Facebook evil faces of the Orcs,

And they, likewise, who snuck the missile system

Covertly to their border and across,

They also did, who spoke out and inspired,

Who armed the boor and cattle long ago,

They also did, who crucified the child

Between commercials and the comic show.

The “Boeing’s” flight has prematurely ended,

And yet the torment’s lasting, I’m afraid:

In Grabovo, militia’s apprehended

The bodies of two hundred ninety eight.

The scraps of foreign passports lie as proof,

Shoes, hats and toys are scattered like confetti,

Nearby, a corpse has fallen through the roof

Into the house of some Grabovo old lady.

But who exactly and from where, of course,

Investigations one day will unearth,

And as for me, I’ll be just who I was -

Still Russian by my blood and by my birth.

Until the day the politicians come around,

All ready to restart their minds anew,

I will confess for them: we shot it down,

And I am guilty, since I’m Russian too.
