Есть счастливцы и счастливицы,
Петь не могущие. Им —
Слезы лить! Как сладко вылиться
Горю — ливнем проливным!
Чтоб под камнем что-то дрогнуло.
Мне ж — призвание как плеть —
Меж стенания надгробного
Долг повелевает — петь.
Пел же над другом своим Давид,
Хоть пополам расколот!
Если б Орфей не сошел в Аид
Сам, а послал бы голос
Свой, только голос послал во тьму,
Сам у порога лишним
Встав, — Эвридика бы по нему
Как по канату вышла…
Как по канату и как на свет,
Слепо и без возврата.
Ибо раз голос тебе, поэт,
Дан, остальное — взято.

There are lucky ones without
the gift of voice. And so, they’ve trained –
tears to flow! And grief pours out
sweetly – like the passing rain.
To stir something. But my calling -
like a whip caught in mid-swing –
in the midst of funeral bawling,
my endowment bids me - sing.
David also sang, lamented,
by his friend’s side, torn to shreds!
If Orpheus had not descended,
only sent his voice instead
into darkness… stood there, useless,
by the gates – it’d be enough
for Eurydice to use it
as a rope to climb above…
Up, towards the light, anew,
blindly, and unshaken.
Poet, if a voice was given you,
all the rest is - taken.
