New England

New England
Though it makes little sense, trees continue to grow.
You can see them outside, but best from far off.
And the air is almost a scandal, for it’s so overblown
that a Boeing can be confused for a moth.
Only the country that birthed us was left behind, -
otherwise, everything is in place and deprived of fate,
and because a trifle can lead one to lose his mind,
oaks, alders, and elms are on guard of late.
The brawnier the roots, the more leaves shake in autumn.
If, in fact, you are one, you don’t have to stop -
flame through the night, lighting the nest in order
to recount the ravens, without waking them up.
One day soon, all you see will be used to light
the oven, make pencils, or a bed, God willing.
But the earth, in which, before long, you’ll lie,
furthermore – alone, doesn’t need you kneeling.
