Love

Love

Twice I awoke and gazed into the distance

out of the window, where the gleams

of streetlamps tried to rescue from my dreams

fragmented phrases, but, resembling ellipses,

could not bring comfort to me, as it seems.

I dreamt that you were pregnant, and in spite

of having lived apart for years on end,

I felt a sense of guilt and so my hands,

While fondling your stomach with delight,

In practice, felt around for my pants

And then the light switch. And, somehow I knew,

That, in effect, I was still leaving you

there in the dark, in dreams, where patient,

you waited and would never misconstrue,

as I returned again, this separation.

For, in that darkness, soundly and lucidly,

resumes the life that in the light suspends.

There, we are married, sanctified with purity,

the two-backed beasts, and kids are our defense,

our validation for our shameless nudity.

One distant future night, from the beyond,

you’ll come to me, exhausted and so thin,

and I will see my daughter or my son,

unnamed of yet, and I won’t dare to think

to stretch my hands to turn the light switch on

and pull away from you. I’ll have no right

to leave you in the shadows where you sit,

along the fence of days by which we're split,

and grow dependent on reality, despite

the fact that I'm unreachable in it.
