I
III
VII
VIII
XII
XIII
XIV
оно достигло плоти;

Butterfly
I
To say that you're no more?
When you had lived so briefly.
There is a lot of grief in
Creator's joke! before
I could say “lived,” – the fated
day of your birth, the same
as when I held you frame
as it disintegrated,
has left me in dismay,
unable to take out
the earlier amount
within the day.
II
Because, for us, the days
are simply nothing. In them -
there’s nothing. One can’t pin them,
and on them, eyes can’t graze:
against the white
background,
their bodies can’t be found,
invisible to sight.
But, if the truth be told,
they're much like you, I'd say,
if one could weight a day,
reducing it tenfold.
III
To say that there's no you?
But what is on my skin
that seems so much akin
to you? This hue
is not born out of nothing.
By whose insistence
does color fill existence?
I doubt that I, while lacking
the needed talent, -
a mumbling lump of words, -
could bring about these sorts
of colors on the palette.
IV
Across your wings,
one finds pupils, lashes,
a girl, a bird, and splashes
of broken things,
a flying portrait,
but of whose face?
And, in your case,
which parts, which portions,
does still life show:
which fruits, which objects?
or is a fish the subject
which you bestow?
V
A landscape? As I reach
a magnifying glass
to better see the fast
nymphs dancing on the beach.
In daylight, shining bright
or in the nighttime gloom?
Is that the sun or moon
that rises to full height
against the skyline? Whose
shapes appear exposed?
What place of nature was
absorbed and reproduced?
VI
I reckon that you are
both, this and that, no less:
there’s something you possess
of faces, objects, stars.
Who was the jeweler, who
did not tense up, enchanted,
when swiftly, he transplanted
the tiny world on you
that robs us of our wit
and clasps us all together,
where you’re - the thought of matter,
and we’re precisely it.
VII
Do tell me, this design -
why was it given
to you, for less than even
a day of time,
where all the space is doubled,
here, in the land of water?
While, as the time moves forward,
you are the one who's robbed of
the chance of being captured,
of thrashing in their hands,
and, as the chase extends,
of holding eyes enraptured.
VIII
You won’t respond to me,
and silence is your right -
it doesn’t come from spite
or your humility,
and not because you’re dead.
Dead or alive, here, each of
Almighty’s wondrous creatures,
tied by a common thread,
received a voice so they
could speak or sing, by instinct:
as to prolong the instant,
the minute, or the day.
IX
It seems that you’ve missed out
on this reward.
If I could say a word,
you’re better off without.
Indeed, why owe such great
debts onto heavens?
Don’t worry if you haven’t
due to your span and weight,
received what most accrued:
sound, too, can be a burden.
Less fleshed than time, you’re certain
to be more mute.
X
You haven’t sensed it yet,
you have no fear, you just
beat, lighter than the dust,
above the flowerbed,
beyond what looks like prison
and has that stifling presence,
beyond both past and present,
and for this very reason,
as you make your escape
to open meadows,
the air around you settles
and takes on shape.
XI
Thus glides a pen
across the paper’s surface,
oblivious of purpose
and yet content
to not know what awaits the script,
or where the heresy entwines
true wisdom; it consigns
to let the fingers’ grip
take hold, as words pulsate
while mutely shifting,
not pollen lifting,
but onerous weight.
XII
Such loveliness with such
an evanescent term
suggest to us, in turn,
at least this much:
it leads one to admit
the world was so designed
without a goal in mind,
and if, somehow, with it,
then we are not its goal.
Friend-etymologist,
no pins or tacks exist
for dark and light at all.
XIII
To bid you now “Good-bye”?
as to the passing day?
Men’s memories just may
fade quickly, wilt and die,
fall out, like hair: but look,
the blame for this, in fact,
is that, behind their backs,
there’s not a lover’s nook,
no double bed to share
to deeply dream on,
no past – but only teems of
your sisters in the air!
XIV
You’re better than No-thing.
That is, you’re nearer,
one can observe you clearer.
Yet, there’s a common link, -
inside – you’re empty.
And as you’re flying past,
in you, it gains its mass,
and for this, evidently,
wherever you might flit,
you’re worth commemorating,-
a light fence separating
myself from it.
