“The prayer rug is all worn out…”

1912

The prayer rug is all worn out,

The room is gloomy, bleak and cold

And dark-green ivy twines around

The window on the outside wall.

The roses stream a fragrant scent,

The icon lamp grows dim and sputters.

Embellished by a loving hand,

The storage chests are bright with flowers.

Nearby, the lace frame shining white…

Your profile’s delicate and rough.

Beneath the handkerchief you hide

The fingers that I’ve kissed with love.

The heart is scared to beat, afraid

Of pain inside it could evoke…

And there is, in my tangled braids,

A slight hint of tobacco smoke.
