These walking routes are generally set up to take you in a loop so you end up back where you started without having to retrace your steps. Of course there are exceptions, like the Cavendish Spit, Route 79, and others. Starting points are suggested because there may be easy parking in that location. If you want to start somewhere else, then feel free.

Each route map includes a little information about the walk. Elevation gain, in meters, is the amount of uphill on the walk. Of course on any loop route, the net gain is 0. The downhill elevation loss is not counted. The hill index is simply the elevation gain divided by the route length. This provides some indication of the amount of uphill you have to contend with. While The Island is relatively low lying, there are a few hilly walk routes that can give you a workout.

The grid reference tells you where to look for a route on the index maps included in this book and on the PEI highway map which is free all over The Island. The index map grids are set up to match the highway map grids, so there is no excuse for not being able to find your way. Of course these days there are plenty of online, hand held and vehicle mounted gadgets to help you find where you want to go.

Most of the routes can be driven around but of course there are some places you must not go with a vehicle, such as the Confederation Trail, beaches and some rough tracks and trails. So you can scout out the route before you walk it, but this may detract from the surprises you may see on the way while on foot. You will be surprised by what you see.

Remember, every step is a joy.
