Classes

The following are new Base Classes for play in an asian-themed campaign. Some of the classes listed are standard core classes, but with new options for an asian-themed campaign.

Barbarian

The core Barbarian class is re-used with a few small changes.

Bushi

'Bushi' is not a closed-content term (it is a real-world term) and so it is used freely.

Kensai

'Kensai' is not a closed-content term (it is a real-world term) and so it is used freely.

In ancient Japan, a kensei was an honorary title given to a warrior of legendary skill in swordsmanship. The literal translation of "kensei" is "sword saint". Thus, the term is considered by some to imply a higher degree of perfection (possibly also encompassing a moral dimension).

Monk

The core Monk class is re-used with a few small changes.

Ninja

'Ninja' is not a closed-content term (it is a real-world term) and so it is used freely.

Samurai

'Samurai' is not a closed-content term (it is a real-world term) and so it is used freely.

Shukenja

The term Shukenja' is not open content and so can not be used. Instead, the term Shugenja is used.

Shugenja are "warrior priests" or "bandit monks." The shugenja accepts a life of hardship and poverty and worships no single god.

MeditationsShugenja may meditate to perform a few specific special abilities. For each hour spent meditating the shugenja gains one meditation point. He may use these meditation points for various purposes.

  • Remove Curse - The Shugenja may cast Remove Curse. The characters caster level is equal to the number of meditation points he spends (not to exceed his shugenja class level). For example, if the character spends 4 meditation points, his effective caster level is 4 (as long as his shugenja level is 4 or less that is.) Regardless of success or failure or the number of meditation points available, the character may not use this ability more than one time per day.
  • Magic Circle against Evil - By spending 4 meditation points the shugenja may cast Magic Circle against Evil. However, he may only use the protective form of the spell only (it can not be used to trap spirits or summoned creatures etc.)
  • Resistance - By spending two meditation points, the shugenja gains the use the Great Fortitude, Lightning Reflexes, or Iron Will feat. He may use only one at a time.
  • Meditate instead of resting - One hour of meditation can be traded for two hours of rest.

Unarmed Combat: Shugenja are skilled combatants with unarmed combat and receive Improved Unarmed Strike as a free feat.

hei

'Sōhei' is not a closed-content term (it is a real-world term) and so it is used freely.

Sōhei (literally "monk warriors") are similar to the mountain ascetic Shugenja, but unlike the solitary shugenja, sōhei generally organized into large armies or mobs. The sōhei did not operate as individuals, or even as members of small, individual temples, but rather as warriors in a large extended brotherhood or monastic order. The 'home temple' of a sōhei monastic order might have had several, if not tens or a hundred, smaller monasteries, training halls, and subordinate temples.

Wu jen

The term 'Wu jen' is not open content and so can not be used. Instead, the term 'Kisai' is used (note to asian-speakers: if you have a better term please enlighten me.)

A Kisai is a Wizard who focuses on spells of elements and nature.

Taboo: At 1st level the Kisai must choose one taboo. Thereafter an additional taboo must be selected upon gaining every five IeveIs.

Elemental MasteryWhen a Kisai learns all spells of a single element up to the highest level he can cast, he is considered a master of that element. Thereafter all spells of that element cast by the character are cast as if Empowered. The character also gains resistance equal to his level versus spells of that element. Note that when the character becomes able to cast a higher-level spell he is no longer a master of the element until he learns all the spells of that element at the new spell level.

Bonus Feats: A Kisai gains the use of two feats each one time per day. The character activates these feats by focusing his ki in a mighty shout.

Yakuza

'Yakuza' is not a closed-content term (it is a real-world term) and so it is used freely.

Several classes abide by certain taboos. A selection of common taboos are included below.

  • Cannot eat meat.
  • Cannot have more treasure than the character can carry.
