The cat is a small, usually furry, carnivorous mammal. Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. Cat senses fit a crepuscular and predatory ecological niche. Cats can hear sounds too faint or too high in frequency for human ears, such as those made by mice and other small game. They can see in near darkness. Like most mammals, cats have poorer color vision and a better sense of smell than humans.
Despite being solitary hunters, cats are a social species, and cat communication includes the use of a variety of vocalizations (meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling and grunting) as well as pheromones and types of cat-specific body language.
Cats typically weigh between 8.8 pounds and 11 pounds, although some breeds can occasionally exceed 25 pounds and other breeds are as small as 4.0 pounds. Cats average about 9–10 inches in height and 18.1 inches in head/body length (males being larger than females), with tails averaging 11.8 inches in length.
Species DescriptionsMost cats have chosen to serve, although to an outside observer they appear to have chosen to be served. Cats are pampered pets throughout most human, elf, gnome, and halfling civilizations (dwarves don’t seem to like them). There are only two things interesting enough to keep a cat’s attention; a chase or a secret. The feline obsession for finding out secrets is legendary. Even when they are not wizards, many noble cats will have the Spellcraft or Knowledge (arcana) skills just to have them. | Noble Cat Species Traits
