[Barbarian] Battle Savant

The battle savant is born on the battlefield, raised on the battlefield, and inevitably dies on the battlefield. The battle savant is an intuitive warrior who enters a state of complete calm when fighting, able to process the movements of opponents and control herself on a level few are able to achieve.

The battle savant is an archetype of the barbarian class.

State of Clarity (Ex)

A battle savant can enter a state of complete clarity, granting her additional combat prowess. Starting at 1st level, a battle savant can enter the state of clarity for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + her Wisdom modifier. At each level after 1st, she can be in a state of clarity for 2 additional rounds. Temporary increases to Wisdom, such as those gained from spells like owl’s wisdom, do not increase the total number of rounds that a battle savant can be in a state of clarity per day. A battle savant can enter her state of clarity as a free action. The total number of rounds of clarity per day is renewed after resting for 8 hours, although these hours do not need to be consecutive.

While in a state of clarity, a battle savant gains a +4 morale bonus to her Wisdom, and may add her Wisdom modifier instead of her Strength or Dexterity modifier on attack rolls. In addition, if she makes a full-attack action, she may make one additional attack, but all her attack rolls take a -2 penalty until the end of her turn. When in a state of clarity, a battle savant gains no bonus on Will saves (except from the bonus to her Wisdom), takes no penalties to AC, and can still use Intelligence-, Dexterity-, and Charisma-based skills. This ability otherwise follows the normal rules for rage, and counts as rage for the purposes of feats and abilities. Any rage powers the battle savant gains as she levels are usable only while in a state of clarity.

A battle savant can end her state of clarity as a free action and is fatigued afterwards for a number of rounds equal to 2 times the number of rounds spent in the state of clarity. A battle savant cannot enter a new state of clarity while fatigued or exhausted but can otherwise enter her state of clarity multiple times during a single encounter or combat. If a battle savant falls unconscious, her state of clarity immediately ends.

This ability replaces the barbarian’s rage ability.

Combat Experience (Ex)

The battle savant learns proper combat techniques through experience on the battlefield. Starting at 4th level, a battle savant counts her barbarian level -3 as her fighter level for the purpose of qualifying for feats (if she has levels in fighter, these levels stack). At 4th level, and every four levels thereafter, a battle savant gains a bonus combat feat; these bonus feats are in addition to those gained from normal advancement.

This ability replaces the barbarian’s rage powers gained at 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, and 20th level.

Battle Awareness (Ex)

At 7th level, the battle savant becomes intuitively aware of danger in her surroundings. A battle savant gains an insight bonus to her AC and her CMD equal to her Wisdom bonus (if any), to a maximum of +1. At every 3 levels thereafter (10th, 13th, 16th, and 19th level), the maximum for this bonus increases by one, to a maximum of +5 at 19th level. This benefit applies only when she is wearing no armor, light armor, or medium armor, and not carrying a heavy load.

These bonuses to AC apply even against touch attacks or when the battle savant is flat-footed. She loses these bonuses when she is immobilized or helpless, when she wears heavy armor, or when she carries a heavy load.

This ability replaces trap sense and damage reduction.
