A deungpae is a round large shield made of bamboo, reeds, or similar materials. While it is very light and maneuverable, it offers less protection than similarly sized shields made of heavier materials. However, if you are proficient with a deungpae, it is possible to use the fact that slashing or piercing weapons tend to punch through one of more layers of the shield to your advantage. If you ready anaction to disarm a foe when he next attacks you with a piercing or slashing weapon, you gain a +4 bonus to your CMB to attempt the disarm. If you fail your disarm attempt and are in turn disarmed by your foe, you lose the deungpae rather than a melee weapon.

A character not proficient with a deungpae gains no shield bonus to AC from this thin shield.
