Night’s companions are more than courtesans and temple prostitutes. Indeed, many companions do not engage in sexual congress with worshipers: some are glorified conversationalists, others are gifted healers, and none ever have to engage in forms of worship without their consent. Despite the common observation that Night’s companions are mostly women, men are quite welcome as companions. Weapon and Armor ProficiencyCompanions of Night are proficient with light armor and with light shields and bucklers. They are proficient with all simple weapons. Charisma SpellcastingCompanions of Night may use Charisma rather than Wisdom as their key ability for casting cleric spells. Domain FocusA companion of Night chooses only one domain from her deity’s portfolio (Community, Charm, Healing, or Knowledge). She does not gain a second domain. Intimate ConnectionAt 1st level, a companion of Night learns the art of companionship, learning how to read people and anticipate their physical and emotional needs. She adds half her cleric level (minimum 1) to Heal and Sense Motive checks. If a companion of Night spends at least an hour engaged in intimate activity with one other creature (conversation, games, reading together all count), both that creature and the companion may treat the next full night’s rest as if they had rested for a full day. There is no limit to the number of individuals a companion may affect with this ability, save for the number of creatures she may engage in a given time. The benefit does not stack for the companion if she shares an intimate connection with more than one creature within a 24-hour period. Mesmerizing Allure (Su or Sp)At 3rd level, a companion of Night gains the ability to use a number of supernatural and spell-like effects. This ability functions like bardic performance in all ways, save that it relies on the companion’s Diplomacy skill rather than Perform. The companion of Night treats her cleric level as her bard level for this purpose, and she may use distraction, fascinate, inspire competence, suggestion, soothing performance, and mass suggestion. Rather than song and dance, these abilities rely on the companion’s sensuality, charm, and empathy. This ability replaces the channel energy abilities gained at 3rd, 9th, and 15th levels, reducing the companion’s maximum channel energy to 7d6. Adept of Desire (Su)At 20th level, whenever the companion of Night channels positive energy, she renders all affected creatures immune to charm or dominate effects from any creature other than herself for a number of rounds equal to her Charisma modifier. |
