2016 National AGM/Conference

The 2016 SpeakEasy AGM/Conference was held on Saturday May 28 at the Dunedin Theosophical Society rooms (former Fitzroy Hotel) which are well recommended.

It started with a relaxation before the Oratory Competition where we each picked a topic card and spoke for up to two minutes. We marked each other on fluency and presentation and gave a score out of ten. Monica Bennett (Canterbury) was first with Barry Hay (Canterbury) second and Chris O’Leary third (Otago/Southland). Well done to all.

Morning tea followed and then the National AGM. There has been a change in the Executive with Marty van der Klay (Canterbury) standing down as National President – thank you Marty for all your hard work and Monica Bennett (Canterbury) elected as President and Barry Hay (Canterbury) as Vice-President.  Ngaire Renton remains as Treasurer and James Fox as Secretary (both from Otago/Southland).

The funder that the Canterbury branch uses for National AGM funding has changed its dates and funding year so a request was made to move the National AGM to later in the year. After consulting the regulations, the National AGM/Conference will now be held in September – which also has the advantage of skipping the winter weather.

After lunch was a selection of Ted talks (, not just about stuttering but also pursuit of happiness, challenging ourselves and setting goals. We then presented Margaret Deuchrass (Otago/Southland), one of the founding members of SpeakEasy and who had recently left the organisation with a gift of appreciation and a personal thank you from each member. Margaret has given a great deal of time initially in setting up the organisation, involved with Otago/Southland group and has inspired all of us with our fluency goals. From all of us, thank you Margaret.

The day concluded with a meal together of pizza and wine.

Thank you to Fresh Choice Green Island and the Community Fund for financial assistance.
