About Ms. Murphy

Ms. Murphy grew up attending BVSD schools and is very happy to be teaching in the district that gave her her start. She is passionate about creating a strong foundation for our youngest learners to build upon and doing so in an environment that embraces diversity and focuses on developing the whole child. Teaching Kindergarten is very rewarding and FUN!  She loves the transformation that takes place in kids during their first year of school.  It is always amazing to see how much kids grow.  The 2014/15 school year will be her ninth year teaching Kindergarten at Birch.

Outside of school she enjoys  spending time with friends and family. Ms. Murphy recently got engaged and moved to Fort Collins with her fiance (Matt) so she enjoys getting to know the Northern part of Colorado a little better. She also enjoys being creative- w
ith an art teacher for a mother, she has always been surrounded and motivated by the arts.  She enjoys photography, drawing and creating things.  Matt and Ms. Murphy also LOVE Legos and are building a Lego city in their basement...think the end of the Lego Movie!  :)

Ms. Murphy went to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan for her undergrad.  (Go Broncos!)  She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A in Elementary Education and has minors in Math and Science, Integrated Creative Arts, and Early Childhood Education (for which she also holds an endorsement).

Ms. Murphy completed her Masters in Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity with an emphasis in Linguistically Diverse Education at University of Colorado at Boulder in December 2012.  She says it was a great learning experience and has helped make her an even stronger teacher for all students, especially students who are learning English as a second (or third!) language.

Through Boulder Valley School District Ms. Murphy has also participated in numerous trainings, courses, cohorts and professional development opportunities in literacy, math, diversity/equity, and curriculum and assessment development.

Some key trainings include:

Kindergarten Literacy Cohort
Literacy Processing Cohort
Add+Vantage Math
CLIP  Training (Literacy Intervention)
BVSD Elementary Curriculum Council
READ Act Lead Learner

Traveling is also a passion of Ms. Murphy's.  She went to Nepal in August of 2007, and loved the experiences she had.  She worked with local children, spent a day eating and playing with "street kids",  visited the temples and sights around Kathmandu, and went for a trek in the hills outside the city.

In the summer of 2010 Ms. Murphy made her first trip to Europe.
She visited England, Belgium, The Netherlands and Ireland.
Visiting Ireland had been a dream of Ms. Murphy's since she was little- how could it not be with a last name like Murphy?  It was amazing to finally set foot on the Emerald Isle and set about exploring!

She can't wait for her next big trip!  Top of Ms. Murphy's "places to visit" list include Africa, a return trip to Europe to explore new countries, and maybe even a trip to Japan to visit her cousin!  It will probably be a while before Ms. Murphy gets to go on another big trip though, so in the meantime she will make due with road trips to visit friends and family throughout the United States!  Toot and Puddle always enjoy tagging along for those adventures!
