Unit 2: Nuclear Chemistry

Regular chemical changes and physical changes involve the electrons outside the nucleus of an atom. However, when changes occur to the protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom, these are called nuclear changes or nuclear reactions. Atoms that have an unstable nucleus are called radioisotopes. These radioisotopes become stable by emitting radiation from their nucleus. Radioactive isotopes are natural and exist everywhere. Even some of the atoms in our bodies and in all living things are radioactive!
