Enrichment

Enrichment Programs are not competitive events. These are opportunities for participants to learn about various different science themes. The enrichment programming is designed and delivered by teachers rather than by student volunteers. There are no points gained for participating but they are still fun and engaging. Even though these programs are optional, you do have to SIGN UP if you want to participate due to limited space.

All Enrichment Programs are open to students of any grade level. A list of Enrichment Programs developed in the past can be found below. The particular program delivered at each olympic will vary from year to year.

Biology: Dissection

3 students per team

Like humans, rats are placental mammals. This means that before birth, the fetus develops in the uterus and receives nourishment and oxygen from the mother through the umbilical cord. Rats are similar to humans; they are omnivores and have little body hair. They also have similar internal systems. Therefore, by dissecting a rat, you can directly observe the characteristic features and arrangements of mammalian systems.

Chemistry: Food Science

3 students per team

How can something as exciting as food be combined with something as boring as chemistry? We here at Mackenzie will attempt to do the impossible. We will break the law of the universe and make chemistry fun (not to mention tasty).

Physics: Little Bits

3 students per team

How do we make things "go"? Using a "Little Bits" circuit building kit, K'Nex construction pieces and your ingenuity, you will explore how the Law of Conservation of Energy, along with the principles of current electricity make cars, lights, fans and more all "go"!

Chemistry: Crazy Chemistry

3 students per team

ITS ALIVE!!!! Well, sorta. You won't be creating abominations of nature here, but you will be putting things in a test tube and seeing what happens. For example, we'll be putting a block of sodium, in its shiny metal form, in a beaker of water. Just Google it.
