Longhorsley WI
We had 15 interested members to our March talk by Ian McArdle on the Victoria Tunnel in Ouseburn. He outlined its history from 1842, when it was opened to transport coal from Spital Tongues colliery to the collier ships on the Tyne, right through to its use in the WW2 as an air raid shelter. It is obviously worth a visit.
At our next meeting on Thursday 7th April at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, we have a talk from Julie Frost, who is the Marketing & Services Communications Officer for HospiceCare North Northumberland. Based in Alnwick, they offer personalised care and support for patients, carers and families in the local area. Do please come along if you would like to hear about their services.
1st April is the beginning of our new subscription year - what better time to come along and meet our members, find out what the W.I. is all about and perhaps consider joining us - you would be made most welcome - it’s not all Jam and Jerusalem! If you are new to the village, come and make some new friends - you are allowed two ‘free’ visits before committing yourself. Please contact me or Mary (788232) if you would prefer to come in with someone and we can put you in touch with a member near you.
We look forward to meeting up in April now the lighter evenings are coming.

Longhorsley Local History Society
We held a very interesting and informative meeting in March. Our speaker, Eleanor George, had thoroughly researched her topic, Pumphreys Tea and Coffee Merchants. We learned of the development of the company and the hard working and very public spirited individuals who owned and managed it and were very much a part of the growth of Newcastle.
