Thought for the Month

As we move into the month of October, we are all aware the nights are drawing in. I’ve heard many people over the last month or so saying that the dark nights seem to have come around a lot quicker this year. I just suppose that in the last year or so, we have wanted the light to last longer after the darkness of the pandemic.

Pope Saint John XXIII said “If God created shadows it was to better emphasise the light.”

When we become anxious or afraid, or when we feel alone, remember it is okay to admit that. In the darkness there are bearers of light who can brighten up our day; where we know we can turn to someone who would help us and point us in the right direction or to just be that listening ear, or even just the simple gesture of a “hello” in the street.

We could say that we do not have anything to offer, but each of us can be that glimmer of hope in the life of other people, we can be that light in the darkness and we should never underestimate the good we can be and do in our world.

Jesus reminds us that even a cup of water given will never go unnoticed. Each of us called to make a difference in the world and the difference we want to see in the world begins with us.

My prayer is that each of us can be light to others, and that we can experience the light that each other brings with the many gifts and talents we can offer no matter how big or small it may be.
