Artist's Biography

I worked for many years in social and community work in London and the South East. In the late 90s I went back to art college and studied Art and Design at Ware College going on to a post graduate in Ceramic Design at Watford College. In 2000 I became a Fellow of the Digswell Arts Trust in Welwyn, Herts where I was given my first studio practice. The Trust supported me by providing Arts in Business programmes with The University of Hertfordshire providing exhibition platforms and Open Studios. During this time I was mentored by artists from the Florence Trust in London. At the same time I had been working with a group of like minded artistic souls and together we rennovated a Victorian stable block to create a Community Arts space. I became one of the founder Trustees of what is now the Courtyard Arts Centre in Hertford . Here I taught ceramic workshops for many years curating and taking part in exhibitions in the purpose built gallery there.

In 2001 I became artist in residence for Pishiobury Park in Sawbridgeworth. With a grant from the National Lottery fund I worked with local schools and community groups creating talks and art workshops relating to the history and ecology of the park. At the end of the two year residency I created a slab built ceramic sculpture called 'Timeline' which is still in situ in the park I am pleased to say. I am also delighted to report that Art Uk have catalogued Timeline and it now joins a prestigious list of public artworks around the UK.

In 2005 I relocated to West Cornwall and initially worked slip casting for Lamorna Pottery. My first Cornish studio was in the grounds of Sancreed House once owned by the artist John Miller. There with the then owner of Sancreed House and a group of others I helped set-up the Space for You project whose aims are to support people often at a time of difficulty in their lives. I offered art and ceramic workshops from my garden studio.

A chance advertisement in a Penzance art shop window led to a permanent stay with the Cowhouse Gallery in the beautiful coastal village of Perranuthnoe. As a member of a group of artists who run the gallery themselves I enjoy a dedicated space in the bright light gallery once an actual Dairy and Cowshed.

A period of productivity in the design of my ceramic pieces went along with a 4 year stay at my studio at Bejowans Farm near St Buryan. There I opened my studio as part of Cornwall Open Studios and enjoyed many happy hours potting and printmaking watching the swallows swirling over the cows grazing in the adjacent fields.
