On Being a Caregiver Janet Holland LHS '67 I was asked to write an article for our church monthly magazine, The Light. The next months are about transition, since we have an interim priest. My article was split in two, first on my being a caregiver for my Mom, second on the Apollo, which I sent last summer. At first I thought, so few classmates knew my Mom. Then on rethinking, I thought perhaps most of us have experienced being a caregiver, and at almost 96, Mom has had care a long time. Her mind is great, but her body started failing with strokes years ago. If it is interesting to you, please print. If you cannot open it in The Light, let me know. I Found This on YoutubeCraig BanneckeLHS '65 ![]() Memphis, TN - Have you ever taken a medicine which was supposed to make you feel better, but instead had some bad side effects on you? That's what happened to me last week, and in researching it I found that the medicine I was prescribed has a history of some dangerous side effects. Following a cystoscopy last week I was told to take a week's worth of the antibiotic Ciprofloxacin (better known as Cipro) designed to avoid the growth of bacteria following certain procedures. Have you ever taken it and have you ever read the warnings for its use? Now, to put the record straight, I have been prescribed and taken this drug many times in my past but never realized I might have suffered some side effects from it - which I now know I did. I found the following notice on the web: WARNING SERIOUS ADVERSE REACTIONS INCLUDING TENDINITIS, TENDON RUPTURE, PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY, CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM EFFECTS. Fluoroquinolones, including CIPRO XR, have been associated with disabling and potentially irreversible serious adverse reactions that have occurred together including: Tendinitis and tendon rupture Peripheral neuropathy Central nervous system effects Discontinue CIPRO XR immediately and avoid the use of fluoroquinolones, including CIPRO XR, in patients who experience any of these serious adverse reactions. After reading about it, I have now concluded the tingling and numbness on the right side of my face and body and a numbness in my right hand which I experienced last month is in high probability a side effect of the Cipro I have been taking. I went to the doctor in the beginning of January the day after the symptoms occurred and at first the doctor seeing me said it was showed the symptoms of a stroke, but an MRI showed no signs of a stroke. I left his care unaware of what caused the numbness which still continues today. It was only after reading the warning for the cipro when I saw I experienced the conditions stated as a side effect for that drug. The day after I took the last prescription last week I felt a soreness in my left Achilles tendon in my left ankle - one of the big side effects I now know about. To avoid tearing a tendon I have elected to give up my daily walking exercise for a while until I feel it is safe again. My main point is that at the age we have now achieved, we need to be careful and do as the pharmacist says and read the accompanying document for any medicine we are prescribed and follow the instructions as written. Especially read about the side effects of prescribed drugs. I called in my problem to my doctor and he prescribed an alternate antibiotic for me. Save the Date!
