'Building on the Foundation of Faith', a local heritage exhibition, June 2022

‘Building on the Foundation of Faith’ charted the post-war rebuilding of a seaside community, both spiritually and physically. It recalled the part played by Gardenmore Presbyterian Church and their minister from 1947 to 1987, Victor Lynas, and the challenges they overcame together during those years.

The exhibition was on display in Larne Museum & Arts Centre from Monday 6th until Friday 24th June 2022.

'Seasons of Affection' - a book launch by Jim Shields, Thursday 19th May 2022

'Seasons of Affection'

A book launch by Jim Shields

"These are the people you could meet on any day in any town."

'Seasons of Affection' is a collection of short stories set in the author's home town. A small, ordinary town inhabited by ordinary people, busy with the everyday task of living.

Yet a central thread of caring pervades the days. Caring for partners and children, for wider family and friends. For the town itself; its heritage and history. Each of the characters is also searching for friendship, independence, affection, love and self-respect. As the seasons in the natural world transition in colour and personality, so too do the ordinary people in this ordinary town, revealing their hidden need and their hidden selves in the pursuit of happiness.

From tales set within the pandemic, as young and old feel their way through a dramatically changing world bedevilled by fake news, to tales from the Victorian era, it seems that the season may pass, but our affections remain true.

Larne man, Jim Shields, published his first collection of short stories 'Scene Through a Rear View Mirror' in 2019, followed by 'Naked Windows' in 2020.

HERITAGE: LIVE with Lisa Dawson, Friday 18th March 2022

HERITAGE: LIVE

In March, Lisa Dawson took a fresh look at traditional music from across Northern Ireland, Ireland and Scotland.

Classical singer, Lisa Dawson, took a fresh look at traditional folk songs by creating new arrangements for piano and voice, blending classical, contemporary and traditional musical styles.

Having performed with many vocal ensembles in venues across the world including Carnegie Hall, New York and The Royal Albert Hall, London, the ‘Heritage’ project is the official launch of Lisa’s solo career.

Lisa has spent the last year creating recordings of 10 traditional songs, which came together to create the ‘Heritage’ album, and is now bringing these songs to life in a live performance, with support from the Arts Council Northern Ireland.

Songs included favourites such as ‘My Lagan Love’, ‘Carrickfergus’ and ‘The Belle of Belfast City (Tell Me Ma)’.

Richard Hayward: Romancing Ireland - an evening with Maurice Leyden, Jane Cassidy and Paul Clements, Thursday 24th February 2022

For decades Richard Hayward (1892-1964) was a household name in Ulster and one of Ireland’s best-loved cultural figures. Brought up in Larne, Hayward was by turns a successful actor, director, film-maker, travel writer, musician and singer. He appeared in the first black-and-white Irish ‘talkies’ and broke new ground in his BBC radio work alongside Tyrone Guthrie. He sang with Delia Murphy and recorded with virtuoso fiddler Sean Maguire while through his travel books, opened up an unknown Ireland to thousands of people.

Local folk-singers Maurice Leyden and Jane Cassidy teamed up with Hayward’s biographer Paul Clements to present a show celebrating Richard Hayward’s fascinating career and contribution to the cultural life of the island of Ireland, through anecdote and folk-song. The performance was enhanced by archive photos and clips, bringing Hayward alive for today’s audience, making the evening a delightful trip down memory lane.

This project received financial support from The Executive Office through Mid & East Antrim Borough Council’s Good Relations Programme.
