Why does filling a tube create a noise that seems to increase in pitch??
-When the water hits the bottom a noise is created
that is made up of many wavelengths
-The wavelength that is 4 times longer than the depth
will resonate (because 1st resonance length is wavelength/4)
-Therefore the pitch that corresponds to this wavelength will be
louder than the other pitches that make up the noise.
-As the tube fills the depth decreases, so shorter and shorter wavelengths
that make up the noise will resonate causing an overall pitch increase.
(Note what happens to air cavity inside your mouth when you whistle up the scales. Tongue moves up and reduces the size of the air cavity)
