BIOGRAPHY

JORMA TAPIO  (b.1957)

He started music with classical piano/violin and switched later to altosaxophone, jazz and bebop.
Soon he played professionally and his playing situations included rockgroups like SIELUN VELJET , AD and TUOMAR NURMIO. marching band, a traditional finnish tangoband and symphony orchestra.
His interest zoomed towards more modern sounds and free improvisation. Early experiences was founding the group LAUANTAIRYTHMÄ in Turku 1980 with pianist ISMO LAAKSO and celist TUOMAS AIROLA who both had a classical background. The group played thier own compositions mixed with free improvisation and they did some giigs also with poet MARKKU INTO. When participating actively to bebop-jamsessions , he got a call to participate to EDWARD VESALA´s workshop in Helsinki 1983. It was a crucial change in his career and VESALA became his greatrest teacher and mindopener then.
Drummer/composer EDWARD VESALA founded his SOUND&FURY - band 1985 and Tapio became a founding member and stayed loyal to the band until Vesala´s untimely death in 1999.
SOUND&FURY became internationally praised small-bigband , doing many acclaimed recordings for ECM and tours around the world. With 4-horn frontline (same personnel for 10 years) they created a strong personal sound and had to cope woth Vesala´s rewarding palette from strict classical type of fluteharmonies to violent energy bursts with the horns. The music was outstandingly personal, having a strong roots in Finnish nature and "collective consciousness" under.
Same time as Tapio was in S&F , he founded/played with other smaller groups like TAPIO-HONGISTO QUARTET with trombonist JARI HONGISTO, OPEN MIND-trio with fagotist HEIKKI WIKLA and woodwind colleque from S&F, PEPA PÄIVINEN. He led a 8-piece group HUGRYMEN and was a member in RAOUL BJÖRKENHEIM´s original KRAKATAU.

He started  to have internationbal collaborations like with  norwegian drummer/percussionist TERJE ISUNGSET and french saxophonist DAUNIK LAZRO. Then he played f.ex.with BOBBY BRADFORD; JAMES NEWTON; JOSEPH JARMAN; CONNY BAUER; PHILIPPE DECEPHER; JEAN BOLGATO; RTAMON LOPEZ; SHOJI HANO ; TESUH SAITOH; ERIC BOCHART; KEIJI HAINO; ARVE HENRIKSEN  ect.
