This is a page to use as a tutorial to get teachers started using VoiceThread as a student presentation tool.

What is Voice Thread?

How can I use it to share and receive feedback on my writing?

1. What is VoiceThread?

    • VoiceThread is an online media album that allows multiple contributors to comment using a variety of tools.

    • VoiceThread supports a variety of file formats, including most audio, video, image formats

2. What can I post on a VoiceThread?

- a document (e.g., Microsoft Word)

- a slideshow (e.g., Powerpoint)

- a video (e.g., YouTube)

(or some combination of the three.)

3. How do I comment on someone else’s work?

Activity #1:

ð Log in using the User ID assigned to you (e.g., Irvingtonstudent1@gmail.com)

ð Password: bulldogs (This password is case-sensitive; be sure the b is lowercase.)

ð Click MyVoice

ð Click William Carlos Williams Poems

ð Click the Comment button.

ð Choose your method: phone, webcam, microphone, type with keyboard

ð Practice looking at the document and leaving a comment.

ð Click to save your comment.

4. How do I create my own VoiceThread User ID? ( * privacy/security guidelines * )

- www.voicethread.com

- Click Sign In or Register

- Click Register

- Enter your name, email address and a VoiceThread password.

- At the bottom, click My Account.

- Add an Identity (an icon and a “name”)-This name is what others will see when you comment.

- DO NOT MAKE YOUR ICON A REAL PICTURE OF YOU! Make your “Identity” anonymous!!!

Activity #2:

ð Create a VoiceThread user ID.

ð Create your “Identity.”

ð Add your image/icon.

5. How do I post my work on VoiceThread?

- Click the Create tab.

- 1. Upload from your computer, Flickr, Facebook, or an URL

- Click Add a title and description to name your work and provide a brief summary for others.

- 2. Comment- Type or speak the first comment (e.g., what would you like others to comment on?).

- 3. Share- First, you will need to add friends/contacts from the class's master list; then you may invite classmates to comment on your work.

Activity #3:

ð Upload a piece of your work onto Voice Thread.

ð Invite other users from the class to view your work.

6. How do I look at comments/feedback others left on my work?

- “Play”

- OR click each person’s icon individually

Other Things You Can Do:

§ Zoom in and view the VoiceThread on a full screen.

§ When you add a title and description, you can also add tags, which make your VoiceThread easily searchable.

§ Browse other people’s VoiceThreads using the Browse tab. Enter a term to search.

§ Use the Help button to access FAQs, forums, and tutorials.

§ Make several Identities under a single account.

§ VoiceThreads you make are automatically private. You can make them public by going to Publishing Options. You control whether to let anyone view it/comment on it and whether you want to moderate comments.

§ Menu: Add other people’s VoiceThreads to your MyVoice page.

§ Menu: View more VoiceThreads by a given user.

§ Menu: Subscribe to VoiceThreads posted by a given user.

§ MenuIf a VoiceThread is public, you may email a link to it or embed it (into Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, iGoogle, etc.).

§ Menu: You can export a VoiceThread to view offline on your computer, iPod, or iPhone. There is a cost of $2.99.

Things You Should Know:

§ VoiceThread is free on a limited basis.

§ The free account allows you to create three VoiceThreads. If you want more than three, you must subscribe (the cost is around $5 per month, and there are special offers/discounts for educational use). Alternately, you may delete an earlier VoiceThread and replace it with a new one.

§ A school account costs $1 per student for a year, but you must have a minimum of 200 students.

§ A class account costs $60 per year for up to 100 students.

§ Your free account comes with 75MB of storage and 30 webcam minutes. You have use 3 free phone minutes (i.e., to comment via phone).
